New Biker Cafe - East London

If anyone gets there before Wednesday 2nd - let us know what you think.

I’m working tomorrow round there so will try and pop in. It is quite a funny area, very trendy area with new build blocks thrown up in an industrial area but also a swingers club and a couple of places where regular raves happen.

Oooo, knickers in a twist, lol.
walkabout I have not been to and don’t want to go, you may be comfortable around drunken city types but I am not as there is always 1 who thinks his funny etc so rather not have at he hassle anymore.
the bike scene I grew up with is far different from kost things happening now and yes I prefer it before.
so yes you go enjoy your poncey latte’s crapaccinos etc and try and pretend but I prefer a good cup of tea etc.

also the event mentioned is something to do with sideburn magazine which is after (sort of) the bike shed event in Shoreditch which I must say was a cracking event when they had 1 earlier in the year

You’re quite right Choppie - they are doing the after party for the Sideburn/ Bikeshed thing, so they can’t be all bad! They sell tea as well!

Looks like a scaled down version of Deus in Australia to me.

I’ll go and check out Muff and see what they’re like but sadly I think they are in the wrong place (sandwiched between the canal/river and an industrial estate ) with very little footfall apart from the estate workers (who just want tea and a wad for £1.50) so unless they can ram the place with events - which is very hard to do on a regular basis - then I don’t think they will be around for long - no matter how many local designer beers they offer.

But on the plus side - hats off for setting this up - I’ll give it a try this week but won’t be buying any t shirts or ahem ‘custom’ bikes.

Sorry but was rather busy at work and the time I managed to get up there it was all shut up. I was hoping to get a picture of the menu/prices etc.

gosh that does look inviting!

especially with its inviting dark alleyways in the picturesque location of Hackney!

Hey Ally - thanks for the heads up on this - I’ve just come back from Muff and I’m gonna have to eat my words.

Met with Josh. Very nice guy and seems pretty switched on. He’s got a clear idea of what he’s doing and has got great potential in the Cafe and exhibition area / workshops attached.

Firstly, and probably most importantly, the cafe side works. I didn’t eat but had a look at the menu and what others were eating. It seems good quality stuff - not the cheapest but not extortionate either.

The coffee was excellent - and at £2.20 good value for a quality espresso-based drink. Filter coffee is cheaper and it’s bottomless - so a refill is on the house.

Beside the cafe a gate is open on to the courtyard and that opens up to a huge parking area that could easily take 100 bikes or so - and it’s secure with the canal on one side and the cafe on the other there is no way anything could get nicked without you knowing.

Then there’s a huge covered ‘hanger’ of an exhibition space for shows etc.

Finally he has his own workshop kitted out for metal banging and torque wrenching and is well advanced in his plans to offer customer bays on a hourly hire basis with lifts, workbench, specialist tools supplied.

All in all excellent potential and a breath of fresh air that someone is doing this and actually going ahead with it.

It is a bit isolated but - hey we’ve got bikes to get there ain’t we?

No it’s not the Ace - but as Josh said it’s design is for a different generation - less chequered tape and rock and roll, more hipster brat custom and style.

Obviously it’s not for everyone - but I’m sure most of us would like it there - if just for a change.

It’s got great potential for a lot of things …LB Christmas party? Ride out destination - start point? Inside exhibition … who knows?

Ps - if you want to look inside the cafe and stroll around the courtyard here is a link to the streview entry for the Carlton cafe - which is what Muff used to be…

Just press the double chevron thingy at the door.

Cheers Ross, sounds alright. I’m sold on the bottomless coffee, which is something that annoys me about the Ace… I’m off to the US early next month, so want to get in before I go. So if anyone wants to hang out with a coolio ginger, let me know

Good find Ally, about time somewhere with proper coffee! The Ace charge £2.50 for that shite Americano impression! Also worth getting the bike out for, Ace is 6 minutes away from me…

Great info Ross - thanks. I’m going to visit on my way back from Manchester on Wednesday and am leading a rideout of 30 or so on Sunday from there. I like the idea of riding through the wall with the roller door, seems as safe as you could hope for it to be. Won’t be for everyone, but to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the Ace, so will make a nice change.

Looks good. I’d be up for heading over for a meet (though can’t do this week or next). The late opening definitely needs sorting mind. Right side of town for me, it’s a good 45min ride to East London from Ace (and no fun riding back dodging booner beamers on the a406 back).

Who cares if it’s stuck in the middle of nowhere with little foot fall. You could say the same for the Ace, do many people go there on foot? If they can keep enough bikers happy, no reason it shouldn’t work out. Be a nice change at weekends from the shite they serve up at the High Beach tea shack.

Isn’t this just a hipster café? Rather than a proper motorcycle cafe? AS in “oooh look at me, I like something stylized and genuine that’s a bit gritty - even though my millionaire parents are funding me to retake my art degree first year at university for the tenth time.”

I used to know someone like that and they recently told me they were buying motorcycle. Hipsters always assimilate cultures, then talk about it like they’re experts on the matter.

as long as they close at 6 = nope

as soon as they start opening till late = deffo

LB xmas party sounds like it could be a good idea

You could be right - only time will tell. Hipster? It couldn’t be more hipster if it grew a long beard, wore buddy holly glasses and more odd brown brogues.

However the cafe itself seems sorted from what I could tell.

One question I forgot to ask was ‘what sort of customers do you see using it and what would you like to see?’

I can’t imagine it full of the 40 something Essex Triumph OC in their gore tex, the car park full of Tigers and Street Triples.Nor full of 30 something R1 and Blade Pilots in their Power Ranger gear - doesn’t seem to fit somehow.

His opening hours seems to suggest he’s looking at local customers in the daytime …and hoping to be a ‘destination’ cafe at weekends???
