When did amber become go?

the highway code states

You MUST NOT move forward over the white line when the red light is showing. Only go forward when the traffic lights are green

so why is it that every scooter in London thinks that amber means go?

really pisses me off as at every set of lights scooters come up my inside and around the outside of me as soon as amber lights up, then when it goes green I have to negotiate around the annoying little bees.

Not just scooters mate , seems like most people on two wheels !

I go on amber, HTH and nearly every other bike I see does too.

If you are sharpish off the lights and are at a crossroads - always check for cars running red lights as you launch - it’s easy to get hit side on and terminally wiped out this way.

I am guilt of this. You are obviously way too slow and you should get one of the mobility scooters

Puts hand up as guilty. I’m sure apart from that rule you obey the entire highway code right? If I waited for the clear green each time, I’m sure a car would have rammed me by now.

I go on amber too.

I know the rules are green light only, but if its clear then i’m off!

I suppose you don’t speed either :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah Ninja is right about being careful.

There are a set of lights near where I live where the first set change green, and then as you approach the second set they turn green too.

So effectively you can shoot away from one set of lights and everyone else stops for the next set because they are red, but if you just keep going, they change just as you hit them.

It’s on a roundabout and doing this one afternoon, a massive great big truck decided today was the day that it would run the obviously very red light on his side (lights tend to give some time before changing in a set).

Came flying around the roundabout and had to lean the bike right over to stay on a much tighter line then I had planned just to avoid going right under the lorry.

The look on his face was one of abject horror as he thought he had just killed me, but I had seen him in plenty of time and had prepared myself to go around on the inside, which is why I had the opportunity to look at his face as it was happening.

So yeah, in essence, be careful shooting off from lights, you never know which numpty has decided that red doesn’t quite apply to him.

Couple of places on my commute to watch out for.

Junction of Pentonville road and Upper Street, people always running the red comming out of Upper Street.

And at Perivale crossing the A40 two sets of lights similar to the ones described in the earlier post.

Yup! But also the opposite happens… a few times I’ve been coming up Upper street, with my light turning amber a few yards back, I start to think about applying power, goes green am at the traffic lights now with throttle open to keep me going and suddenly a car or quite often a car comes flying past! particularly those turning right into Upper Street!!!

I know what the OP is saying about scooters taking off on amber- this year there seem to be a few who do this habitually- and I mean they go at the instance the amber light appears- and more often than not in a diagonal trajectory right across your path. For this reason I generally let them go and pass them five seconds later- after they have ‘cleared the mines’.

ouch

guilty as charged, its London everyone is in a rush. i’m sure if i don’t move off quickly i get a beep or car rearing me

as soon as i’m outside of London, speed cameras reduce and traffic lights become non-existent…it feels so good! not having to worry about those damn traffic lights, and some of them are confusing.

well done to sticking to rules  someone’s got to  if you really want everyone to obide by this rule then start a campaign and ask the government to issue out £60 tickets to everyone who goes through amber, money is one way to suppress people. always has been and always will be

I go on amber. I don’t see the problem, as long as you watch out for people jumping reds.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody on the roads actually sit and wait for green.

I think you’re the only biker who waits for Green…

and you get raped by scooters, and your complaining about it on a forum where the large majority of offenders are members…

This guy has the thinking of a Politician!

car drivers don’t wait for green, and as a general rule I don’t think they have a problem with bikes coming to the front and then disapearing off into the distance as it doesnt effect thier journey.

Imagine coming to the front, pulling over in front of them, then sitting there like this highway code goody two shoes not moving a muscle till its gone green!!! they would be pretty pi55ed
