Waterproof Alpinestars that's not so waterproof

The purpose of this post is to see if anyone else has had similar experience with Alpinestars (or other branded) waterproof jackets that turn out not to be so waterproof. I generally use this jacket http://www.getgeared.co.uk/alpinestars-gunner-jacket-wp-black-white-red but barely a year old it doesn’t keep me dry. It gets soaking wet between the hand pockets only…

I’ve already contacted GetGeared about the problem and hope they will sort something out as I’d expect quality for money. Let’s see what they come back with as I can’t find any warranty promise

  • People telling you there is no such thing as a 100% waterproof  jackets

  • People telling you get goretex/ waterproofs from an army surplus store to wear over your normal gear.

As avi has said, the motorbike industry doesn’t know the definition of waterproof.

Sounds like a manufacturer fault.
Just to prove you wrong Jorge

- People telling you how great their jacket is, forgetting they only ride in the dry / 500 miles a year

Same ere with Richa textile clothing, will try the army surplus route. Any recommended army surplus stores in SE London / Kent ?

haha - For an all weather biker; the army surplus store route is the cheapest and most effective that I've tried :) But they are a pain to carry around.

As others have said all bike gear lets in water eventually.

I’ve spent all morning in the rain so far and am reasonably dry, wear high vis road workers trousers and jacket over bike gear. A little warm but only usually get a wet a$$ and maybe elbows

Right, so waterproof doesn’t really exist in the strictest sense of the meaning. If getgeared wont help then i’ll look to invest in a light cover i can wear above the jacket.

Thank you all

well... hold on a sec. Try to claim to the manufacturer if the Jacket is new and the situations it's as bad as you say. How long did it take before getting soaking wet?

I wear a one piece over my leaters in the summer if it rains & over my textiles in the winter

getting the one piece dry in my office is easy and don’t take long

getting my textiles dry takes a lot longer

To be fair, it has to be medium to heavy rain and at least 30 minutes before my shirt under the jacket gets wet. However, going into winter i need to know i can get to the office dry and not having to change underwear!

@Wise, can you please tell me what brand/make of 1 piece you wear over the textiles?

Did you remember to close the zips or velcro or whatever ? It might be that you are just leaving them open !!

After a year, have you given it a wash and treatment to help the waterproofing?

My Goretex IXS jacket has remained waterproof for the last 18 months commuting everyday 25-50 miles each way, including 30 minutes of motorway in pissing rain on more than one occasion.

I wish I could say the same about my non-goretex ‘waterproof’ RST trousers, which leak pretty badly after 30 minutes of heavy rain. Currently trying to decide between getting a proper pair of goretex bike trousers or just accepting the faff of army surplus overtrousers.

In weather like today I usually wear my mesh textile jacket with a police issue goretex hi-vis thing over the top as it’s a bit cooler than a winter bike jacket.

Yes you were correct in your original post :) In my defense; people had already said those two things before me, I just jumped on the bandwagon. :)

Yes, I washed it in cold water by hand and always fully close zips and straps.

Treatment for a waterproofing? Maybe I need to learn something new today!

Not sure what’s it’s like for normal textiles, but gtx gear needs to be washed with nikwax and then the same brand offers a water repellant spray… supposedly re activates the membrane making it waterproof.

I’m sure they do something for normal wp textiles as they do a bit of everything. Most recently I used their leather wax to re waterproof my boots.

It’s essentially a layer on the fabric that makes water roll off
