Tottenham Riots

If the youth don’t see a future for themselves - what do we expect? They hear stories of bankers n their bonuses, politicians fiddling their expenses, policemen taking bribes…but it’s ok, they can always go to Uni to better themselves - if they don’t mind taking on £9k fees each year.

The “lock em up” moral majority (and I am not condoning what the looters did) should note there’s quite a few bigger robbing bastards who seem to be above the law. Just that they don’t smash windows to get their goods.

+1

any maybe the media can direct more attention to other more important matters, like people who really are hungry, and hard done by such as in africa, instead of giving these thugs air time and glorification.

we should all be grateful for what we have. theres to many people out there who moan they are skint with no money, so hard done by, yet they have many luxuries such as the latest clothes, mobile phones, new cars/motorbikes, sky tv, holidays that are taken as essential items.

I saw a program the other night, two families, one lost theyre house, they were complaining about being so broke and hard done by - huddled round a massive plasma tv.

Another woman, 2 weeks left for her house to be re possesed, was crying her house was getting taken away from her. Then, she decided to sell her car to make up the money - An Audi TT!!!

Technically, it was not a riot. If it is a riot, the government absorbs the costs; if it’s disturbance, the people pay for their losses.

Very good point you are making BL. I think the issue here is very complex and many excuses have been made in the past and at present. I have worked as youth worker in Old Street with socially excluded (read: kicked out of school) kids for a year. It was the most difficult job I have ever done in my life and to this day, I still don’t know if I actually made a significant difference to the kids I worked with. Where do you start when governments passing ridiculous laws whilst trying to fill their own pockets over the years, got us the society we live in now?

rumours are rumours, and twitter is a rumour machine. Though here and there there’s also some real stuff on it, now folks are saying it’ll go further in the North, Barnet and Finchley too today O_O

And I always thought I pay a lot more extra compared to other places to have my peace from this bollocks O_o

Surely riots and civil disturbance on the streets of our capital city is more important to the UK public than famine in Africa?
It certainly is to me!

There’s no point in us trying to solve the rest of the worlds problems by throwing money and resources we don’t really have at internal problems in Libya or famines in Africa when we can’t sort our own problems out.
Wouldn’t we be better off spending the money we use for foreign aid to sort out problems on our own doorstep? Then once we’re up and running, we can begin to worry about others.

I agree in certain circumstances, we give to much foreign aid (especially to countries who have theyre own space programs) HOWEVER, i do not think pouring millions of pounds into buidling “community centres” in Tottenham and other places like it is going to help. Like i said, people need to get of theyre back sides and do something about it themselves, and not complain the government are not giving them handouts.

Looks like it’s starting in Hackney now…

And lets not forget that the majority of the time the trouble on the streets is from children, who will copycat each other if they think they will get away with it. I think giving it the term civil unrest, or civil disturbance sparked by the economic downturn is bigging it up into something more than what it is.

I also believe that the more the media provides “coverage” of what is happening, the more it sparks panic.

take a look at the economic downturn - everytime you listen to the news they are talking about volatile markets, and mayhem, would you buy stock in that climate?

Its also been said that certain Business editors of certain media organisations helped make the start of the economic downturn worse

Whatever people think of the shooting, how many riots have there been over gangs murdering people in cold blood? Shooting innocent bloody children, stabbing people in pointless post-code wars, ruining lives of hundreds of people through their intimidation and murder? How many riots have happened over that?

None, barely any acts of solidarity at all, then someone gets killed by the police and it’s time to start walking on all fours, scream and piss in the street like a wild animals and knick some clothes from JJB.

You cannot condone any actions taken by the rioters at all, it’s completely absurd. They’ve burnt down people’s shops, houses and facilities. Well done, bunch of utter scumbags the lot of them.

It’s much worse than the parliment square stuff.

The trouble with this country is that its gone to soft… there is no real law it’s just not England any more everyone wants to fight everyone nothing is enough any more. No one should be carrying a gun only the police and if they do ! To right they should be shot.

Disturbances in Mare St, getting closer to E2. Dalston Kingsland Shopping Centre was shut down 45 mins ago. Police cars being attacked outside Hackney Central station -according to reports from BBC and London Tonight.

Just walked out of the house to meet up with a friend who lives in Hackney. They can’t get out because it has all kicked off.

Meh, just bring in the Army/TA and open fire already, seriously…

Friend posted he got a message via Blackberry Broadcast that folks plan for ~9:15PM to riot/loot Oxford Street. True or not, it’s ridiculous nonetheless.

On the other side, what are the chances with services being tied up with all these folks that there are coppers on the motorways later? :Whistling:

If any Hackney people can’t get home, I have an air mattress and you can stay here if you need to.

so, anyone in the know know something about holloway road? rumour machine (i.e. twitter) starts going on about holloway road, which is me way home

Nothing about Holloway as far as I see yet.

Lewisham is kicking off now. McDonalds is smashed at least.

Hackney is farked.

Wood Green shops have been asked to close early.

There’s rumours it’s spreading to Mitcham and Wimbledon. A bit too close for comfort :frowning:
