That’s what I was thinkin

WP that man!

As this event is being discussed in another thread, I want to ask a couple of general questions of everyone:

a/ How much reserve do you have and how far do you think it will get you?

b/ What do you do when the reserve light comes on? Look for a petrol station NOW? Or take it easy thinking you’ll get to one you know of soon enough?

For me, it’s 3 litres, about 20 miles and yeah, I want petrol now!

Havnt tested it on the 'bird yet but apparently its 20 miles, at least the teapot had a fuel tap wiv reserve and could get 40 outta it (miles NOT cuppas)

I thought it would be the same as before… I ran out in the darkest deepest of Wales earlier in the year, 120-130 (cant remember now) before the reserve light came on, and ran out at the top of a mountain road, clutch in for over 3 miles…thankfully it was all down hill and stopped a few feet from a petrol garage. When I looked at the mileage on reserve it was 50 miles!

That’s why I thought we’d be ok last night… but obviously motorway miles (going *** meant it was being sucked through alot quicker)

  • Mine lasts 30 miles on both Mark’s SV and my ZX10.- I note the mileage and consider my journey. If it’s on my way in to work, given that it’s 31 miles exactly and there is a petrol station less than a mile from work, it probably doesnt matter until later  I only start to get worried if its 20 miles since the light came on…which isnt much help on the M2, where the distance between junctions 5 and 6 is 12 miles  Et voila - the only time Ive run out of fuel…

I think mine’s 3 litres, which should give me 45 to 50 miles.

But I generally brick it as soon as the reserve light goes on, and fill up before my reserve trip counter has hit 15m or so.

It does help that there’s a petrol station practically at the end of my road. Also my mrs has a smaller tank, and is even more paranoid about running out of petrol than I am, so when we’re riding together she makes us stop about every 110 miles to fill up. (Which is about half a tank for me)

I miss the old fuel taps where you had a reserve setting.

I also miss self cancelling indicators and greese nipples.

They call it progress:Whistling:

I usually start to look for petrol once the light comes on, which is about every 10 miles on the 'Storm:w00t:

As most of my riding so far has been in town, I’ve never been that far from fuel.

There’s nothing more buttock clenching than when the fuel light comes on in the middle of The Brecons:w00t:

I tend to fill up pretty soon after the light comes on.

Normally filling up about 18L and have a 22L tank on the V-Strom.

So at about 50mpg I should have about 40 miles left

And to think I am going to follow your around wales later in the year:w00t: think I might bring a tomtom and a jerry can

It’s ok Dan, you wont need a TomTom, just petrol :D:D:D:D or a tow rope

and a petrol can for ang and mark

You have a RESERVE LIGHT! I should be so lucky…

I just have to read it off the tacho, reset every time I fill up and then I know when it gets to 146km it’s gonna run out.

Yep you read that right, a 146 KM 80 mile tank. A joke isn’t it. Though I love my Bros I can’t wait to be able to move on from 33bhp next March and get something I can ride for more than an hour with out stopping for fuel…

JimC has been known to carry fuel in cans and then deliberately run his bike dry so he knows exactly how far he can get on reserve! BB - I believe he got an X9 500 to do 70 miles.

One of the good things about the Aprilia is the dash. The light comes on, the trip starts counting up the miles from then so you know just how far you’ve travelled on reserve. Taken with care I can get 30/35 miles from that point.

So let’s call that 25.

Still miss the old BMW air head with twin taps, each with a reserve setting. Used to run with just one tap on. When the engine spluttered, turn on the other, then one tap to reserve, then the second.

The ultimate reserve was to find a grass verge, lay the bike on its’ side to get all of the fuel to one side of the tank. Good for about another 7 or 8 miles, then you were in deep sh*t with no one to blame except yourself.

Reserve is a very British characteristic. Spotted Dick and Rhubarb Crumble define our way of life. Ride till you BLEED!

Just for the record it was an X9 250, carb version, not injected. Reserve usually came on at 180 miles. Tank was claimed to be 14.5 litres.

Ran it dry, it did 264 miles. Added 1 litre, and then within a mile added 15.4 litres at a petrol station. So the tank was in fact 16.5 litres - so all descriptions were designed to be pessimistic. I just wish they were accurate instead. :frowning:

The 500 quotes 12.5 litres for the tank capacity - it is in fact 14.5. I’ve not yet challenged the tripod, but thanks for reminding me - I do know that one Gilera Fuoco (to give it its correct name just this once) owner only did 28 miles WOT (wide open throttle) on the M-way from reserve to conk-out.

I think the idea of deliberately running out of fuel (with some spare fuel onboard somewhere!) is a good idea for every bike owner to do once. Fuel pumps don’t really appreciate running dry, so once is enough…
