The advice I’ve heard that works quite well is click once if you would cover your brake, again if you would start to brake gently, and again if you would hammer them on. This way (the way the vids are constructed) you shouldn’t click too much and lose credit. Oh, there is a still frame at the start of each clip. Do not count hazards and click for them all at once when then clip starts!
take your time Gaz…and remember…the theory test is common sense…read the questions each about 2-3 times…so you don’t mis understand any…i treated it like a game…lol…it kinda put me at ease and settled me down…
hazard perception, look at the footage and be aware of what could be potentially a hazard to you or any other road user…someone crossing the road…road works…yadda yadda yadda…
you’ll crack it mate…i’ll be routing for ya on weds…
I know that its all about the way you handle the process of reading and thinking.
I was doing the tests on the disc earlier and had to really think about what was the right answer and what would I generally do…never realised how far apart they were!! lol
Well at the end of the day, I can only do my best - and hey if I don’t pass I could always bribe the tester!! lol
Imagine a very prim and proper Health and Safety jobsworth examining the answers on the multiple choice. OK some you can eliminate as being absurd, but some, really, are very confusing for those who have driven/ridden for a long time. They are aimed at those who have never ridden/driven before, so expect the classroom answer.
I actually found the HP test to be quite confusing but i must say, i did bugger all research into it. One of them i clicked too many times so got 0 points there. The others i got 3 or 4 out of 5 and still passed so really, if you have a clue you should be ok. Even if you are a bit dumb like me and cant follow the test.
The theory part is straightforward, i had a book from a mate on it as had never done the uk theory before and there are a couple of things different from Australia. Just read the question clearly and if you got an idea on the rules you should know a rough answer to match their stupidly phrased mumbo to.
Best to keep practicing the hazard perception to get the best score. To get maximum points you do need to be very conscious of the slightest movement or change on the screen- particularly on the ‘night’ simulations where if I remember correctly the instant the slightest hint of light ahead appeared was the best time to do your first click. Also, any sign of a bicycle usually means it’s going to develop into a hazard at some point so keep an eye on it (just like real life really!). Best of luck, it’s not really that difficult…
Gazza - when you take the actual test the quality of the clips is much better than on the dvd. Just take your time with the questions mate, and at the end go back and check all your answers thoroughly. Good luck!!
I heartily agree with jimc’s posted technique for the HP Test of ‘click when you would cover the brake lever’.
The man at the desk of the Test Centre, during my brief conversation with him, asked if I drove a car.
He pushed back his chair and demonstrated moving his foot from the accelerator to covering the brake pedal of the imaginary car as one would on the road.
I sat at the computer, ‘driving’ my car. It worked for me and others to whom I’ve spoken say it worked for them ‘riding’ their bikes.
I tried it with the DVD at home after I’d passed and managed good scores using the technique, having managed to ‘pass’ just once in all my practice attempts without it.
Its real easy, just relax and you dont lose point for clicking more times, just if you click too fast. And even if you do, it only gives you 0 for that clip. (then you have an idea what too fast is! lol)
