Spinning your bike on the side stand Yay or Nay?

well?

I do it all the time, as my bike is massive and my drive is small, as well as my housemates parking being poor. but, is it recommended?

obvious potential pitfalls are you drop it, but what are the chances of the side stand collapsing and the bike falling on your leg or, worse still, frame damage as the very high load point where the side stand is attached isn’t capable of being taken.

opinions please!

depends on the bike. my vfr it’s fine but an R6 has a tiny stand and I thought it might snap.

Used to do it all the time but was always apprehensive about the possible damage that might happen.

For me if its just occasionally then yeah fine but anything more i’d probably be inclined to try something else.

Always done it on every bike and every dealer i worked in done it too, the trick is though not to lift it so its fully supporting the whole weight on the sidestand - just put some pressure on the handlebar and it will spin round whilst still on the floor reducing the weight on the stand!

Errr depends on the bike really, weight and height make a difference as well as the stands angle to the ground - a fairly 'straight down ’ stand (a la Guzzi ) would be a lot easier
as would light weight and - I think- a taller bike ( which gives you more control I think)

I have heard of stands bending but I have never heard of a stand snapping. :ermm:

Not if you ride a Duc

R6 is one of the easiest for this movement - don’t worry that stand is solid!

I do it with a 245kg (no fuel) bike no probs

i ised to do it all the time as my garden was too small to turn around in.
now ive moved and the sv is alot heavier than my old bikes so i try not to find myself in that situation.

i remember a friend doing it a few years ago and it bent the mount point really badly.
i cant remember which bike it was tho…

Ktm 525exc is a big no no, there made of cheese and known to snap just resting the bike on uneven surface lol

If you’re talking about the 990, according to unverified internet folklore it’s probably best not to.

And a fix:

Saying that, I’ve not fitted the kit nor had any issues BUT it does cross my mind every time I pivot the bike around.

I spin in the garage every morning… :w00t:

Can be arsed with a 20 point turn 1st thing !

Now, if I knew how to do a burnout donut…

Ok all = your chance to make a fortune!

Bring out “SPINABIKE”

Its two 7cm metal discs separated by ball bearings and held together by a central spigot type thingy - universal so it fits the foot of all bike stands.

You can now spin the heaviest bike with your little finger!

Sell i t for £19.99 ( have it made in Chjna for 99p )

Two years later you’re the next James Dyson!

If the stand can take the stress no reason why not too. My CBF can be a ballerina pivoting around on the side stand.

do it all the time

on my stunt bike throw it on the floor and spin it on the cage aswel

I wouldn’t do it with alu stand…

R

Have done it with my virago a fair bit. No issues with it.

I have problems spinning my beamer though. It’s fragile and goes all bendy. I’ve found that if you have a soft bit of ply under it in your garage , less stress on the stand and spins easier

I do it all the time with my CBR, the stand seems to be pretty solid, be careful when you pull it towards you as if you are too enthusiastic the bike can suddenly feel very light as it tips towards you. Honda stands seem fairly solid. Some Yamahas look as if they’ve spray painted a cocktail stick black and attached it to the bike such is the amount of flex under the weight of the bike.

All bikes are fine, moved them all on their side stands for years!

Cheers Martin, yes, 990 It is, think I’ll check the cover for cracks, if there are none then I’ll probably carry on doing it.
