Got stopped by police today for doing 45 in a 30mph zone. £60 and 3 points.
Is there any point me pleading not guilty and taking it to court?

na just take it, did they get ya by camera. I got 3 points in august 54 in a 40
Only if you think you can win, otherwise you’ll end up with a heftier fine and costs to the prosecution.Check the ticket for any procedural errors such as time location, reg number, offence details.
How about you take it on the chin and accept it?
You were caught speeding, end of really.
its easy
were you ‘not guilty’?
How did they get you?
Caught me with one of the mobile handheld speed readers. There was a car just infront of me going faster than me and he never got pulled lol
If you *were * doing 45 in a 30, why not go all ‘avant garde’ and actually accept responsibility for breaking the law - I’m sure the Magistrate will be suitably shocked and impressed!
Keep your vision up in future!!
Hmm, the fact remains the front of a bike is a small ‘footprint’ especially for a handheld radar gun. And as you say there was a car in front of you going faster than you…
It’s your call, at the end of the day,… its your word against the policeman.
If you’re on 9 points it ‘might’ be worth challenging - otherwise as you say yourself you weren’t travelling below/at the speed limit.
If you want more informaed advice - search google for ‘pepipoo’ the guys on there know their stuff and are happy to adevise motorists on all manner of motoring legal issues.
Good luck. ![]()
(I got stopped in April(car) - 13 years clean license then you get ‘stung’ - it hurts
)
Thanks guys, I’ll take time to consider.
I have no problem with the fine. I have a clean license and I want to keep it that way. Most of you are probably thinking don’t speed and get caught then
Blimey WAQS , you think we don’t know we are speeding?
Like most responsible bikers, there are places with 30 or 40 mph limits where I trickle through 10 mph below the limit.
Show me a road where there is a stupid limit because of a bunch of accident back in the 60’s, before the junctions were changed and the road surfaces improved, I’ll just take that as an “advisory”.
Let’s all be honest. Anti social as it may be, we always bend the rules. The smart/lucky ones tend to get away with it (22 years since my last nick), the unlucky or unobservant get caught.
Like Brandon says, “Keep your vision up in future.”
The cops make themselves easy enough to spot. If you’d have slowed down to under 35 when you saw them, they may have let you get away with it.
If you take it to court, the police officer’s opinion alone, that you were breaking the speed limit, is enough to convict you. The Radar trap evidence just backs up his opinion.
Take the fine and points. And (not to rub salt in your wound) don’t forget to tell you insurance company. Otherwise, if you need to claim, and they need a way to wriggle out of paying out, they will use it against you and nullify your policy.
Sorry there’s not much good news here for you.
15 over… take the ticket… it’s a fairly generous resolution.
take it on the chin
3 points on your licence wont hurt you.
the only other option would be a speed awareness course but I dont really know much about them…
If there’s a chance of a speed awareness course you are notified of it when the ticket arrives. They are only offered if you are a certain number of miles over the limit (think it’s under 10).
This reminds me.
If you get pulled for any offence do you have to sign the ticket, surely by signing it you are accepting the offence? I’m pretty sure I was told I had to sign it
you just sign for receipt of the ticket, not as any admission of guilt.
I’d go with the 3 points and £60. Insurance companies don’t even bother with that these days and £60 is less than a meal for you and your wife. You were speeding so it’s not unreasonable.
If you want to go to court, then you’d better believe in your heart that you were not speeding, because it’s not worth the effort unless you genuinely believe that. I went to court earlier this year, off duty plod lied about what I did . . . I knew I was innocent and so it was worth fighting. Still found guilty . . . . I expected it as if the court start taking my word over that of a copper then we’re on a slippery slope but I had to make the effort. He even lied on the stand, what he said there wasn’t the same as what he said in his written statement and neither were true anyway (hence discrepancies) . . . lots of holes but the Magistrates simply weren’t interested and I didn’t have an evidence to show . . . only my word and they don’t know me from Adam.
If you have evidence, a good argument and can do it without a solicitor (as I did) then it’s worth a punt, but if you have to employ a solicitor then that’s £1300 down the toilet straight away, plus fine, plus costs.
Update:
Went police station and surrendered licence. Took the fine + 3 points option. At the end of the day I was fully aware I was over the limit so I deserved it. Also notified insurance company and they were cool with it :).
EDIT: Wasn’t offered the speed awareness option. Its not used in this part of town apparently (East London)
not strictly true… I think insurance companies are now using this as an opportunity to make some cash.
When I got my 3 points, both my car & bike insurer were like “good news, we’re not increasing your premium”…
However, at renewal time and new quote time, running quotes with and without the points, results in a difference of 40-150 quid depending on the company… the bike side of things its less than on the car, but still there is a difference which will be with you for 5 years… ![]()
