Shame: HM Racing

EDIT: I take it all back, shaming HM was not something I should have done. Had the spring kit delivered to Dobles only to receive a phone call saying they didn’t realise I wanted the front done as well, their quote was only based on the rear.:doze:They were still a fair bit cheaper than HM (by about £80) but for £80 I can accept the argument that you’re paying extra for experience.

HM I humbly apologise. Mods feel free to delete this thread to preserve what little dignity I have left:crying:

Ive heard some good things about HM Racing, but i cant help but wander if its a bit clicky, and you may have been given a higher quote, as you may not have known better, and they thought they would try it?

Who knows. But yes 21st Moto: Huge virtual slap needed!

So you wrote a shame post against a company whose services you haven’t used, just because their prices we’re higher than a competitor.

No, not because they were higher, because they were six and a half times higher. Do you think £260 is a reasonable price for changing the springs when others are quoting between £40-£60?

Agreed.

It’s probably not really comparing like for like.

Besides, they’ll spend much longer setting up your suspension than 15-20 minutes!

But … if you need anything suspension done, contact B on here!

It’s changing the front and rear springs, I don’t think HM will do it any differently to anyone else. Fair enough regarding the set up, maybe they’d do a better job, but would it take any longer than 20 minutes? I’m not taking the bike on track, it’s just for commuting and the odd weekend blast (though to be fair I didn’t mention this when I emailed for a quote).

wots your probs with abe? am not far from them so if you need it picking up etc i dont mind.

Cheers mate, appreciatte the ofer but it’s boked in with Dobles for next Fridaym won’t actually have the springs until Wednesday or Thursday so couldn’t get it to ABE in time.

I don’t see anything wrong with shaming a company for this.

This is a heads up to anyone else who might get a quote from HM Racing…make sure you get a quote elsewhere.

I’ve always found HM Racing to be a first class company. You are paying for years of experience, a lot of people mess around with suspension and get it completely wrong. You got three quotes and they were the highest this does not justifie a shame thread.

I think some people are missing the point here, it’s nothing to do with the quality of service, it’s the price being quoted for what is, according to the two other companies, an hours labour. It’s not even the fact that they gave a higher price for the job, it’s how much higher the quote is.

I said in my original post that HM are highly regarded and I’m not disputing that, but they’re not going to do anything different or special in simply changing the springs that I’m supplying. I expected them to charge more for setting it up, but even so the most I’d have expected was 2 hours labour. Maybe it was, and they charge £130 per hour?

+1 to that:) there always busy with racers bike for tune ups so dont see it worth there time doing a cheap job when they could earn £260+. last time i needed my set up done i waited 3weeks for a space:w00t: dont see a reason to shame them cos you get what ya pay for:)

Looking at their web site HM will do the following for their money:

Remove and refit front forks into motorcycle.

Remove, fit new rear spring and refit shock into motorcycle.

Drain forks and flush out, upgrade fluid and fit new spring kit.

Suspension set up.

Suspension setup consists of:

  • The motorcycle is correctly adjusted to the rider’s weight, ability and application.
  • Rider will be advised if spring rates are incorrect for rider weight.
  • Checks are made for fork and linkage drag, steering play and tyre wear.
  • Spring preloads and damping adjustments are checked and re set.

Do you honestly think that you’ll get all that for £40?

At that price rather than take the front end apart, I reckon they’ll just whip the fork tops off with the forks in situ pull the old springs out & pop the new ones in.

They’re highly regarded specialists (I’ve known more than a few people who’ve used them & none have been less than happy with the service). They’ve been totally upfront on their price, it’s the same as they quote on their website, shaming them for being expensive is like slagging off the Dorchester for charging £150 for dinner 'cos your local kebab shop will feed you for a tenner!

^ this
It doesn’t matter if they charge more - you might as well shame VW because a VW Polo costs more than the equivalent Skoda / Seat, even when it’s the basically the same car.

That’s 5 minutes I wont get back…

My Triumph 12k service, i was quoted £550-£600 by dealers. I used Tri-Moto (they’re also very highly regarded, do a search, Triumph trained mechanics), they quoted £300, charged £270. Should I have paid a dealer twice as much for the same work then?

Lucky you don’t at HM, you’d be £20 down:P

There’s a chap near where I live who also gets rave reviews for bike set up, unfortunately he’s silly busy at the moment and I need the work doing next week. He charges £25 for a full set up. If people would rather pay silly money in the belief that this is the only way to get a good job done then good luck to them, it’s their money. It’s alot to pay for a spot of name dropping though.

I’ll bet most of those who’ve commented on this thread would make ABE their first point of call if they needed similar work done though:P

I must defend HM RACING here aswell. Lets brake this down a bitAll Bike Engineering - I had issue with them a few years back when I purchased a brake disc that was made out the wrong type of metal and the pads ate the disc away leaving it hanging by a thread. It was a death trap of a brake disc would NEVER use them again myself.

Verdict - ****

Next up Dobles - To be fair they are alright. But then they are a massive dealership and you can always get a deal out of them.I bought my CBR from them and got a grand off it striaght away. and a free crash helmet, alarm and gloves…

Verdict - Best Honda dealer IMO

21st Moto - EXPENSIVE for servicing.Over priced bikes…Clothing?? lol you seen the size of there shop…lol.Dobels puts them to shame as a Honda dealer. They can’t offer deals anywhere near dobels can.

Verdict - Could be a long winter boys

HM Racing - Perry Leask best in the country. Dyno operator (Best in the country) They set up many racebikes and I have had 3 of my racebikes set up there. They are the best around by a long chalk…If you want No frills go to allbike…HM RACING is the best for suspension and tuning SIMPLES.

Verdict - Hope I get a discount for this dave

this will get dave to drop the costs:D
