It looks like i will be needing at least a new lock… left work and put my 1.5 metre chain in the boot of the Honda and got home to find that the LOOP of the lock had gone so i’ll be needing a new lock
Which do people reccomend? I’ve heard Almax are the way to go? are Old English any good?
strong recommendations… Because they are the best in a recent MCN test their top chain could not be broken with any hand tool in the end they resulted to a power tool and it still took 13mins, thats enough time for the cops to arrive while the cu*ts are still trying to steal your bike, enough time for you to call a few friends over and take the law into your own hand or you could have a coffee then go out there and beat them to a pulp
Get the best chain you can afford. Be it Almax, English chain etc as long as its insurance approved.
I know every one keeps insisting you buy an Almax, but their best chain did crap in the recent test, with the non-approved one beating it as did the English chain…and before every one starts shouting at me…yes I have seen a broken Almax. I’ve also seen loads of broken Oxford chains and English chains…the ONLY chain I’ve never seen broken in 6 years working in a bike shop is an Abus granit extreme…so you get what you pays for.
What no one mentions is a) leave the chain loose on the floor and they will break it no probs and b) whats the point in a chain if its not tied to anything?
I personally use an English chain and an Oxford chain, but only in the garage as I have an SV as a ground anchor, and a Datatool garage defender too. Never had a bike stolen either.
BabyJ, you should know better mate! That ‘test’ where the Almax was beaten wasn’t a real-world test! They basically set it up in a way that you would never have, and hit it with a sledge-hammer on a solid base! Jeez, even a battleship’s mooring anchor would fail under those circumstances!
As flats says, you keep it off the ground so there’s no leverage, and since when will a thief use a noisy approach like a sledge hammer? He’d wake up the whole neighbourhood!
why do you always take the bait! Every time hehehehe
All I was trying to get across is buy the best chain you can afford, yes Almax are good, but so are plenty of other chains out there. Man your getting too easy
ps how was the medical dude…not too late were you?
Haha, yeah, not too late, but I arrived in a huge sweat, it was pouring off me. The Doc kindly gave me a few tissues to sort myself out The appointment seemed to go okay, just got to wait for the insurance co to pull their finger out now!
Yay… found the piece of my lock that was missing hiding under the front seat and laying across the battery terminals so will stick with the Abus for now until the Ally Pally show and save a few pennies for the Almax
Out of curiosity what do you guys do if you have to park up and there is nowhere to affix the chain / bike to?
i wrap the cahin around the rear wheel 3 times so the chain is tight and get it up off the floor around the highest part of the wheel that i can, put my disc lock on the front and the alarm on… never had any problems just wondred what you guys do in this instance?!
Check out MCN 19/7/06 where they tested a number of locks where it was fitted to bike with some of it on the ground still!!
The sold secures and thatcham approved…all were broken in under 2 mins apart from the Almax IIII which is not rated and took 13 mins to break and only after resorting to power tools.
As everyone has said though…keep it off the floor and you get what you pays for.
BabyJ the English Quadlink and Hyperlink took 6 and 35 secs respectivly with Abus Granit Extreme in 2 mins 14secs.
I know this is pulling a topic from the graveyard but what would you guys suggest for a good bicycle lock? Almax seems a bit pricey for a $800-1200 bike.
