Pull over sir...

I recently got £30 on the spot fine for tiny numberplate, got it with the bike honest! really should have changed it ages ago, me just being lazy, but I also got £30 fine for tinted headlight covers (pic below) now it was bright daylight hours, and these are stuck on with velcro so I can take them off at night, on the ticket the copper put ‘Offence code 469 Lamps not maintained’ is this right? are they actually illegal? When I went to produce my paperwork the coppers were just as puzzled saying, that cant be right?Does anyone actually know the law for these? As I think they look cool

they are illegal, although do look good, a cop once asked a friend who had some on"imagine your on a dual carriageway/motorway travelling at speed and you came into a bit of fog, would you pull over and take the covers off, or keep going?"

hmmm, i just thought of this

imagine its the end of the world, and the sky turns dark and meteors are crashing to earth and the dead are roaming the streets, will you pull over to take em off or keep going? lol

ok im off

medwas you pulled over in east?

see teh police dont like small plates, especially really small plates…

the headlights covers are illegal, yes they look good but still illegal.

the only thing they dont mind are…loud pipes…infact i know of quite a few that praise them as they let car drivers and pedestrians alike now that you are there, or at least presnt if they cant see you.

hell i have before now pulled up alongside them at the lights, nodded at them, window comes down…here we go…copper to me- ‘alright mate, that sounds nice, give it a bit of throttle…bbbbbbaaaarrrrpppp!!!..oh sounds good… take care’ - see they can be kool!!:w00t:

You got a ticket for those???

Why?

bright daylight?

If the weather deterioated then you would pull over and remove them…

I’m interested in the offence he used, ‘lamps not maintained’ is a bit of a lame one tbh…

Personally, i don’t see a problem with them at all…certainly not legally, only if used in poor lighting conditions…

bit like teh dark visor rule?

Yes, exactly like the tinted visor argument… (btw, i’m on your side with that one…)

Unlucky mate. Sounds like you were unlucky enough to meet the most anal copper in the west:doze:

Just consider yourself lucky you didn’t have rim tape too…lol:D

very true chunkyi thought they were ok for day use like tinted visors.

I thought you were technically ok with a tinted visor as long as you carried a clear one with you so when the light deteriorated you could change them over. Surely thats just the same as taking the covers off the lights? :ermm:

Super unlucky there Med Z6.

If its the first time you have been ‘Tugged’ on this, I thought they would have warned you to get it sorted or else…another thing…I’m sure i read somewhere the other day that you can get a ‘daylight MOT’ so you dont have to have a headlight fitted…(i dont know how true that is…spose someone will put me right on it though)

I have heard about that daylight MOT aswell, apparently if you don’t have a headlight fitted and no switch for em then you can ride it legally during daylight.

I’ve heard of that from a qualified bike instructor as well. Apparently main lamps and indicators are not a legal requirement of the Daylight MOT. Of course, if you rode the bike at night/ bad lighting conditions, you would probably be fkt if caught.

This ‘MOT tester’s manual’ looks interesting.

The following is quoted in the lamps info section -
"This inspection applies to:
all machines, except those which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are
. only used during daylight hours, and
. not used at times of seriously reduced visibility

If this situation occurs the machine presenter should be issued with a VT32 (advisory notice) recording the above."

Can’t find the ‘Daylight MOT’ mentioned though.

I enquired about a Daylight MOT for my EXUP

The only light that is a legal requirement is a stop tail light.

BUT

If you have lights/switches fitted to a machine it must all be working and the covers prevent that I’d imagine.

Says the All year Round white van man;)

kool mate, if stopped i walys politly point out the ‘rule’ and i add how usefull a dark visor is on a sunny day:cool: most are polie are on teh ball with it, some get anal about it, thats life isnt it…occasionally get caught out my self and end up in teh dark with a dark visor, it gets lifted up and it stays up,i’ve never been pulled for it, most times i carry a clear one anyway.

Good job you dont ride a bike, cos its bright orange

I have a feeling that all this “no lighting” stuff in the MoT is for historic vehicles and there is a date cut off when it no longer applies.

Might be wrong, but if I am, bet someone out there will know the answer and put me right.

Oldguy.

it is a useful one that is used by a fair few track bikes so that you dont have to trailer them to the track, assuming good weather conditions, etc.

Personally I think headlight covers look lame, havent seen any bike look better because of them…

Oh and for chunks, I saw in the new Hein Gericke catalog that they had two types of rim tape, normal and ‘performance’ :ermm:

Not so mate. Trials bikes are often Daylight MOT’d to get between sections:)

You could always get Grim to blow it over mate:cool:
