I reside in the ghetto of St Johns Wood. Yes it’s so rough you wouldn’t believe it. We don’t have a chip or kebab shop in ‘the Wood’ so the local ruffians tend to hang around outside the Furriers hurling mild criticisms in lieu of insults to those who don’t holiday in Val d’Isere. Yes it’s rough.
But seriously, it’s the poverty and people that make an area a ghetto. I had a mate that used to live in Newington Green, that place was proper rough. Used to visit him frequently, venture away from the shops into the housing schemes and its bandit country.

east london, i dont think the bits most people see are ghettos, but get off the beaten track, into the estates, and see how people live, crammed in tiny flats, in horrible tower blocks with metal grills on your doors and windows, druggies in your stair wells, lifts not working, rubbish piled up in the carparks, kids running wild and dogs on ropes, graffitti, the smell of P*** and screaming loonies driven mad by society.

Before i read your answer ratty i was just going to put down the same thing…we are not talking other countries here DR? THIS country has changed and been changed by the people who have come here over the past few years…dont ask me why, drugs? who knows?..i DO know that they are finding more and more places like brothels that are being run AND set up by, shall we say, people who were not born in this country…now before you start, im not getting into the immigrant stuff either…im just saying…we have more crime now than ever…drugs,sex,robberies,burglaries and of course gun and knife crimes have soared…kids killing kids and speaking in that effing stooopid slang and giving it large with the finger shapes they throw around, and all this pow, pow, pow…even when they are talking to their mates !! (whats all that about?) Why are they walking round with those poor part pitbull part staff dogs as well?..like its some kind of status symbol…
Coming home from work at 12.30 today…there was a crowd of about 7 standing around on a street corner in DAGENHAM…one had one of these dogs, leaning against the railings and smoking (god knows what), and they were all wearing trousers with the waistband down to their knees, tops with hoods over the head, (in this weather!!) and throwing their hands in the air sort of swiping the air, as they talked !!! Some others joined them and its the “hand signal” given and the “hug me bruva” hug…they do…and i just sat in my car thinking…let me get home FFS, cos i just give up…do they know what they look like? and more so do their PARENTS know/care what they look like???
All i know is that i think twice nowdays about where and what time i go out, and NOT just in the evening or even if im on the bike… Its sick, its stupid and its something i would hate to have to call any of my parents if one of mine was like these lot today…can you IMAGINE this lot having our next generation of children? What they gonna teach them, how to make some quick money by stealing some poor sods mobile and going and selling it to these “internet cafe” shops that sell phones etc…or how to “chirps” someone…or how to watch them at the ATM machines and see their pin number then steal their credit cards ?
Do you know these people go to supermarkets and “pick out” lone older women or women with young kids, follow them round to see if they can steal their money/purse …OR wait till they are loading their cars with the kids bouncing about, or the older people, not so fast to catch them when they run off…? They are targetting supermarket ATMs for the same reason as they do it to the garage ones…i had to tell one guy today in front of me in a queue, to move his wallet from his back pocket cos i could see it and could have had it away and he wouldnt have known…he said “thanks” and moved it to his front pocket…
My other half had to get out of his car and stop 2 kids just about to jump an old guy at the banks ATM and he said people were all around and yet no one helped the guy…he jumped over the barrier and one of them run off and he got the other one against the wall of the bank, slammed him up against it and said “come at me like you did him” took the old guys credit card off this turd, and let him drop to the floor, to which he run off …and then helped the old guy before giving him back his card…he said the man was so shook up he couldnt talk…the other day, he was going to the barbers, saw 3 kids hanging around another poor sod at the banks ATM, knew what they were going to do, but this time, he said “no, im not getting involved”…he said when he got out of the barbers, there was the old bill at the bank, and he knew they had jumped him…
Today, i saw a youngster in this bright sunshine, blazing hot, and hes got this thick jkt on zipped up…now call me cynical, but i reckon its cos he had a knife or something on him to protect himself…The owner of our pizza place? owns a flat above his shop…someone has SHOT his window out…this is DAGENHAM FFS !!!
Bring back the days when the likes of the Krays ran the place…they may have been bastards, but like the Mafia, they only ever dealt with their own…they kept **** like this off our streets…i know they were involved in all sorts, but all this **** with these kids would be sorted…they would clear the streets again…least we knew were we stood with them about !!! You cant go out after a certain time of night, not even to go and get a pizza cos some arsewipe is standing in a crowd of other arsewipes smoking dope, and as soon as you walk passed them, want to give it the biggun, and start …oh you might be able to take on one of them…but how can you win over 30 odd with knives? dont care who you are, you wont make it home…so in effect, we are being made prisoners in our own homes

w10 is meant to be rough… i went to college there and we had police vans waiting at the end of the day, i remember bein locked in the college once to stop the gang outside the college with dogs and weapons coming in… sutton estate is meant to b pretty rough… they found a 7/7 terrorist living there… even so not as ghetto as some of the places mentioned…
Point is, youve always had your fights after school, not right but youve had em…youve always had yer fights after the pub or club…BUT nowdays, if you dont go out armed, then YOU could be the one stabbed up, least if you have something on you, they dont get away scot free…dont get me wrong please…im not saying we all have to get tooled up now…but im not going to lie and say i havent taken a knife with me when i know ive had to go out and will be back after midnight and alone in the car…
Thing is, whats happened that these kids use a knife on another human being with intent to kill them and all for what? looking at them in a “funny way” or what they class as funny…? and the girls are just as bad…but what is it with all this im badder than you attitude? We used to want to meet a man and marry and settle down with kids…they just want to go out, get drugged up, steal off someone, and stab them up…thats before they get hooked and HAVE to go out and give away their bodies for money for more…nice life !!!

Would you like to know your mum or dad is out on the streets at any time of day let alone night in certain areas?..and you can forget about “certain areas” to be honest, cos its happening everywhere now. Where i am used to be classed as “country”…yeh right…some country !! the streets are full of groups of kids making it so that you cant walk on the pavement, you have to go into the road to get round them, and they just stand there gawping or making some kind of unintelligent conversation amongst themselves !!! How longs it gonna be before we arm ourselves in our own homes? (if some of us dont already?)…this aint funny **** now you know !!!
My son was threatened by a gun man at our local pub just cos his mate had got drunk and said something to some other guy, who took it wrong, so my son got his mate and apologised to the guy for him…but the guy went outside and when my son came out with his mate, this guy was there pointing a gun at him !!! For WHAT ??? apologising for his mate ?? years ago if you had a thing about someone you both had a row, maybe threw some punches, whatever…but they didnt go and get a gun !!! they aint brave its a coward that uses a weapon on someone else, thats easy…you dont walk away a big man cos youve just used a gun or knife on someone who had nothing on them to get YOU as well…i know of someone whos known for being some kind of hard man…should have seen him when he caught flu !! what a pussy !!! did nothing but moan and bleat on about how ill he was…another one tried it on, got a smack in the mouth, and went running to his wife to call the police !! FFS…so, while they are in a crowd, they give it the biggun, when on their own? forget it, another story !!!

to me a lot of areas in east are “ghetto” (no offence meant). the estates have a certain vibe of despair that i dont pick up in south, but maybe im just Desensitised to the things happening on my side of the fence. even now travelling across east and south is almost like going between two different countries, different slang, differnt rules, people carry themselves differntly. i guess what u see as ghetto all depends on where your from and what ur used to…

You can have rough looking estates but with a sense of community and purpose and you can nicer ones that are in lockdown because of gangs.
The issue is the new ‘feudal’ society we have where we are all serfs to the almighty media and celebrity. Unimaginative, low grade replicators wanting it now because they saw it on tv. No reading and poorer literacy mean that fewer people exercise their imaginations and unimaginative people are the ones that complain ‘Oh there’s nothing to do except hang out on the street…’
Media is the biggest gang of all. They create the ‘lifestyle and validation’ for many of these yoots, and then scare people with stories of gun and knife crime so others can demonise ALL teenagers - self fulfilling prophecy.
Oh and I’m a Bow resident, have been for almost a decade and I don’t agree with the Ghetto tag. There is a lot to like about Bow and inner East London.
Agree, i dont go with this ghetto tag either…there ARE no so called ghettos, its all over and in every country, London is not the only place its going on…i dont personally have a problem with them killing each other…bluddy go for it…but i do have a problem with them going to places just to stab up some innocent person, male or female for something they said or some way they conducted themselves in front of the person who came back and stabbed them!! (undertand what im saying here dont take it the wrong way ok?) Teenagers like to go to clubs etc and have a laugh with mates, we have all done it, had a bit to drink, played the fool etc and been looked after by our mates…whatever…its part of life…least it WAS…nowdays they cant go in case they “bump” someone innocently and get “jooked” cos of it !!! We used to hear of Black on White crimes now its not the colour thing…in fact the white boys like to copy the black guys way, stance, lingo, etc…how many white boys you heard that sound soooo black its unreal…in fact i know black guys who are peed off cos of that too !!! Ratty, i remember Chimes…my sons been there…yeh it did get reputation, bit like Faces is now, or epping forest country club…i cant see how there is going to be an end to it to be honest…some of the killings are over drugs etc…its the innocents in this that get to me…how can you stab up someone walking in the street, or someone trying to protect a girlfriend or wife or kid from abuse from these teenagers, or someone from school? These people dont hang out in the dingy, crappy clubs that those others do…if you hang out with those kind of people you can expect to have some kind of fallout, but to go and kill them for it?? what do they gain out of it? why make some youngster who prob has no mates and wants to join your crew, go out and stab or kill someone to be “initiated”…how can you make some young girl have sex with all the guys to “prove” themselves first? Most of all? How would YOU feel right now, if it was YOUR kid or sister or brother doing this kind of thing? I know a “crew” who tied wire across the road and knocked a motorcyclist off and nearly garotted him, turns out they were waiting for someone they were “after”, who was on a bicycle and delivering “stuff” for someone else…what did the guy on the motorbike know? how could he have seen that thin wire across the road? What if it happens to one of us?..what if we are out on our bikes, take a wrong turn, which im ALWAYS doing, and end up in some street full of these kids in a gang?..you gonna be able to turn round and go on your way?..its ok you saying, “I’ll do this or that to them” how you gonna do that with a knife sticking out your ass ?Sounds like im going on a bit dont it…best i shut the eff up now
