as i hone in on my new weapon of choice (ok it is not 100% decided yet but i am getting there…) i was wondering if anyone knew the score on haggling with a dealer on the price of a brand new bike?
must admit i have never bought a new bike or car in the past, so do not know if they generally have any room to move on price, or if it is possible to get extras (alarm, bodywork etc.) thrown in on the deal?
You should expect to pay less that the list price for a new bike. How much depends on the make, model and time of year. It is well worth talking to more than one dealer to see who will offer you the best deal. Make sure you compare like with like - ask each dealer to price the whole bike, accessories and all. It is worth looking at the price dealers are seeking for preregistered bikes this gives a clue as to what they expect to get.
I bought new last year without a trade in and got 11% off list price.
subject to a test ride (and a few calculations) i am pretty set on getting an '08 Aprilia Shiver, it seems to tick every box for me and i’ve read plenty of good reviews for it. saw one in the flesh at a dealer on the weekend and it was love at first sight, and sitting on it just felt right (i’m sure you all know what i mean…)
guess i’ll need to get my bartering hat on and see how far i can knock em down. if i can nail 10% off it’ll bring it in to my budget (esp. with the 0% over 2 years…)
Barter barter barter. Find out prices from as many dealers as you can. Then see which ones will throw in what with the price. I bought two bikes last year and didn’t pay anywhere near the advertised price for either of them.
Oh and a cheeky smile, low cut top and tight fitting leathers work, but I guess you won’t be able to use that weapon
that thread made for interesting reading, though i think there is a mild difference between a £150 helmet and a £6k bike!
it wont take much convincing/tea/good service for me to buy it if i decide it is the bike for me, so have to admit i will be bartering hard and trying to get the best deal i can. i work in sales so i know that at the end of the day you only give the customer a deal you are comfortable with and that you are making enough margin on to accept. otherwise you just say no, that is the best i can do and if you can get better elsewhere then good luck!
thats the other way i look at it in my job, if you throw something else in (i.e. cans, clothes) the customer is getting something they want, but you are only actually giving away half its retail worth as you are only really losing the ‘cost’ price of the item. everyone can walk away happy that way. i’d like an alarm/immobiliser and perhaps a bellypan/hugger, so if i can get them in on the full list price i’d prob be happy to pay it.
I did really well, I managed to get my spanking new GSXR750 K7 in April last year for the knock down price of £9,750
He started off at the list price of £13,500 but I had cash and was playing hardball. As I left the dealership he was grinning from ear to ear and telling his colleagues about the sale. He had obviously enjoyed the cut and thrust of negotiation as much I had and no doubt had a new found respect for the customer.
I even managed to get a free pillion seat thrown in. After a bit of humming and harr-ing he caved. Brilliant.
Hahahahahah caught me a couple of marlins - Thanks Ian and Toby!!!
Sorry for the facetious post - Can you tell I’m bored today…
Actually got it for £7,200 in April last year which was a tidy little discount from list plus a couple of bits and bobs. The power of paying by debit card.
As if I’d pay over the odds for me bike. What do you think I am a newly DAS’sed city boy visiting the M word
