Electronic connectors

Hi guys,

Fitting some projector headlights to the GSXR, and have a straight wire cable coming from the standard gsxr loom, but the headlights have a small metal plate with a hole in to connect the wire to.

Is there a connector I can crimp/attach/solder onto the loom wire so that attaching it to the hole on the headlight is secure and waterproof? I could go the insulating tape route, but wondered if there was a better way?

Do you mean lika a spade connector Ian?

Yeap, that is the one, cheers mate

any bits like that i use these people , make a list as the postage is the same for a lot or a little

but they are very cheap

No worries:)

Should be able to get them at any good car spares place

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php[/quote] Ive used these guys too and theyve always been good for me. E, I have lots of this stuff in Felixtowe, but youd have to wait. Maybe someone here has some spare.

Naah it’s cool, maplin have em and there is one round the corner from me at work, will jump and get them tonight

if you are connecting high load items like lights it’s far better to run the cabling back to the battery terminals (via a fuse) and use a relay to switch on/of. the loading for the lights may be too much for the loom and/or can cause so much voltage drop that the lights won’t work properly.

Cheers Kenny, should be OK, as it is all standard original loom, I just snipped the original connectors off the end and am using those for the new headlights…

But let me know if that might cause issues

I buy all that kinda stuff from a nearby car accessory place (Clarkins @ Walthamstow) - picked up some spade connectors today, 10p each, and a couple of sump washers, 50p each - the other day I went there for some exhaust downpipe bolts set me back a whole 15p each :w00t:

if you just want the connectors try SCREWFIX … £5.00 per 100

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/90867/Electrical-Supplies/Cable-Accessories/Crimps/Crimp-Blue-Female-6-3mm-Pack-of-100

insulating tape there is cheap too …

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/58097/Sealants-Adhesives/Tapes/Insulating-Sealing-Tape/No-Nonsense-Insulated-Tape-Black-19mm-x-33mm

use heat shrink once you have connected the parts nice water proof and very secure just make sure you put the heat shrink tube on before you join the wires and looks like a pro job un like electical tape

Heat shrink sleeve = good job.

But don’t use Screwfix heat shrink sleeve. The cable insulation melts before the damned stuff shrinks turning and easy job into a pain in the ar*e.

if you are replaceing rather than supplimenting should be ok although there are lots of threads out there that believe it gives a better light if you draw straight from the battery as there is less voltage drop, see how they look, if they are bright enough as is the jobs a good 'un  maplins for the heat shrink and connectors by the way, and if possible then butt solder the wiring its less likely to give problems in the future.if crimping then you can get butt connectors with an integral water resistant grease for a better seal. maplins again I believe.

Cheers mate, will pick em up from maplins  Had a quick test of everything and it all seems OK, only thing is the indicators seem to flash really quickly, which I believe is a common problem with aftermarkets… anyone know how to solve this one?

You need to add a resistor across the circuit. M&P or Busters should sell them:)

You know a lot about electric’s for someone that couldn’t wire his own headlight :D:) You been Googleing :Whistling:

Fugg off Mr Whippy. You mean the headlamp you was going to give me?:stuck_out_tongue: I’m still waiting for it but got bored so i’ve bought one. I’ve bought a new loom now so don’t need your help either but I wouldn’t mind a 99;)

Thought you’d probably have a sweet tooth

Here ya go E
