DISC LOCK

Aarrgghh i have a lovely heavy duty disc lock and my work mate has just shown me within 1 min how to undo the lock with a lid of biro pen. Time for a change of locks me think.

Where have you been mate?

This was exposed in the bike press a couple of years ago:w00t:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zy8sEj8etU Shows you how easy it is:crazy:

I have the Oxford Monster lock, i wonder if that`s any good.

Basically John, if your lock has a round barrel lock it’s NFG mate:w00t:

tad behind here mate, gonna go get a nice lock tomorrow. anyone got a good idea for a good lock.

I’m not really a fan of disk locks, I’d get a nice chain if I was you.Not as convenient as a disklock but stops your new bike being lifted into a van easily.

No doubt others will disagree though;)

The key of my disc lock is sort of half moon shape.

The crescent profile keys are OK AFAIK. The ones at risk were the ones about 10mm diameter round keys

Chain only helps if you have something secure to bolt it to. And you have to keep the lock off the floor. They are so hardened to tool attack that a good hit from a lump or sledge hammer and they shatter.

If you are looking for a disk lock would recommend a Motrax Vishas.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you Kevsta. A quality chain will afford you greater protection than any disc lock, whether it’s tethered to a post or not. Obviously its better to anchor your machine to a solid object, but even without, it;'s still better than a disc lock.

Not all chains are as hard as you imply. Have you never seen the punishment Almax chains can withstand?:w00t:

Don’t take my word for it, just do a search on here for “Almax” and see the praise it has earned:cool:

Oxford replaced the round-key locks FOC to anyone who asked.

Just shows it doesn’t really matter!

Why have stuff like this to show lowlife scumbags how to do it ? Yes your professionals will have the gear to do this, but now your average toerag is gonna get ideas, I think covering your bike up as well as cahins and disclocks will put off joyriders and numpties as they will look for summat easier.

Meant that the locks become the weak point. They tend to harden them against tool attack, which makes them prone to shatter or brittle failure.

And that video was shocking, and a couple of the links failed due to brittleness. Makes you wonder if it worth even fitting a chain or disk lock.

At the end of the day if the pikey $hits are going to nick it they probably don’t care to much to if it is damaged. Damaged = stripped for parts, undamaged = new identity and sold.

And the really sad thing, if they catch them instead of lengthy jail term, they are likely to get a fine and community service.

if a thief wants yr bike, he’ll have it. no matter what. IMO

ive a disk lock and a heavy bike so it needs 4 strong people to lift it,so i hope

they will move on to the next bike

Those videos are scary, but I think you have to apply the rule that if you have more security than the next bike, then the thieving scum-bags will go for the easiest target. (So do you encourage your riding buddies not to bother with any security!? – bad thought)

Apparently round here (Sussex) most bikes go missing from homes. They break in to your house, grab all your security and vehicle keys and then ride/drive away with your bikes/cars while you are in dream la-la land. This method usually only involves breaking one lock (your door) and no hot-wiring skills necessary.

I think some of you guys are missing my point.

Agreed, the video of the chains being cropped was scary but they are the well known high street brand names.

As I said, save the money you would spend on a disc lock and get a chain like one of these…

These fellas are almost indestructable:cool:

Don’t wish to worry you Steve, but I’m on My second Busa as I tried that theory  Bike thieves do travel as a gang, they got my disclock, new cover tools under the seat etc etc :crying:Now I have the Almax etc and have learnt my lesson :satisfied:

To all Bikers, how many of you who use Disk Locks have rode off or nearly rode off with the disk lock on?
And how many times?
