Kawasaki GPX 250 - Quoted £900 - Happy with this quote.
Its a 1996 model so rubber parts are generally fooked. Prev owner has been replacing seals and has paperwork to prove, however he hasnt touched the brake hoses and they’re pretty knackered.
I run a new quote, declaring Braided hoses and R&G crash bungs, and now no-one will quote me.

Anyone know why?
Surely these two things make the bike safer?

Who the fook declares braided hoses. R&G crash bungs should give you a tiny tiny discount.

honest people who don’t want their insurance invalidated

Best start declaring the LB stickers I put on.

LB stickers are not a performance upgrade, braided lines are.

@columbo, insurance is a matter of probability, even though they theoretically make it safer, the kind of people that put braided lines and bungs on their insurance crash more.

well with ebike I got a £45-50 reduction from my insurance at the time…

Take the policy out

Call them a week later, say you’ve fitted braided hoses and crash bobbins, see what they say. It should be fine…
If they get arsey about it, say 'I told them on the phone when I took the policy out, why aren’t they on my policy ’ etc etc…

Best not to lie to your insurance company though. I mean this in the nicest possible way but you are relatively ‘high risk’ at your age…

Be very careful with this - telling them later could either cause them to cancel the policy as you saw they wouldn’t quote you with this in the first place. Or they could choose to put a lovely additional premium on top along with an admin fee.

Don’t do the phone bit as they will have a record of the call as it states on the phone ‘all calls are recorded’ they definitely are and will be able to trace the call, or not (if the call never took place) then you don’t have a leg to stand on.

Yeah maybe I’m being a bit too cheeky with that one…

Mind you, when I took out my policy I gave them a huge list of all my mods down the phone, they okay’d them all, listed them all out to me when they were confirming the quote down the phone… I paid in full and took the policy.

When my documents came through the post a week or so later, not a single mod or accessory was on there!?! I had to call them AGAIN and give them the list AGAIN.

They sent me amended documents after that. Next time I take my insurance out I’m gonna record the phone call from my end…

don’t lie to the insurance dudes… they record every single quote conversation you have and save it as .wav files with your name and policy number attached. Server space is cheap this days, and it means they don’t get caught out by clever dicks like us trying to claim we said somethin we didn’t… it works the other way round too, but they don’t need to lie to us, so its not really the same thing.

For putting on a supremely better alternative to standard equipment is fucking daft.

From a safety point of view surely braided lines are better.

What about a double bubble screen? I’d argue that reduces drag, thus increasing aerodynamic performance.

Things that make you go faster and make you more of risk of a serious crash or parts that make your bike more attractive for theft - that’s how the insurer will view it unfortunately.

its mostly because people who want better brakes are assumed to be going faster.
The kit porvided by the manufacturer is more than adequate to meet British Roasd Safety standards.
The only reason for upgrading your braking potential is you that you are upgrading your speed and need upgraded braking… simple. You upgrade your lines and tell the insurer, they tick the box “Goes Faster” which at the bottom of their spreadsheet raises your risk leel and therefore premiums…

you may think its common sense to upgrade to a better product, but you don’t NEED to, you WANT to … and they ask WHY would you want to when what you are provided with is sufficient…

Its not that hard to work out really.

Which braided lines have you got :w00t:. I’ve got Goodridge brake lines and they do none of those things.

It might be because 20% increased braking efficiency still applies at 30mph (or whatever the limit is on that road).

its just about all to do with getting more money out of u do u really think insurance comps give a stuff if u fit braided hoses !

yeah… they do… cos if you’re in a crash and they inspect your bike and you haven’t told them about the upgraded hoses, they can legally invalidate your insurance if they feel it is relevant to what happened, or if you just happen to get a jobs-worth assessor, or if a lot of accidents have happened recently, and the insurer is clamping down on undeclared modifications…

is it worth the risk?

you decide.

its daft i tell ya.

do a insurance quote on a new hornet, then do another one on the abs model. the abs model has been coming up more expensive???

its easy… if you want cheap insurance. Drive like a granny on a Vespa, or better yet, don’t ride a motorbike.
If you wanna ride a bike, you’re going to pay. Simple. If you don’t like the quote you get ask why its that high, if you still don’t like it, shop around.

that could be because the abs model is more expensive ? would cost them more to replace when it gets nicked…
