Cyclists, get out of the way!

Why do some cyclists insist on getting right infront of us at traffic lights knowing full well that when those lights change, they will have a 600cc ninja or similar, accelarating off at a much higher rate!!!

Some of it is ignorance and getting in the way to prove a point but quite a lot of it is self preservation - if you leave enough room for someone to just about squeeze through when you’re cycling then a lot of people will pretty much barge you out of the way to squeeze through that gap at 40mph.

All the advice and training for cyclists will advise ‘taking the lane’ in that situation to ensure that motorists have to wait for a suitable gap before attempting an overtake.

It also prevents motorists pulling a ‘left hook’ where they turn left across a cylist, if the car/bike is stuck behind then that can’t happen.

Why would they want to sit behind a bike with an underseat exhaust pumping toxic fumes out at them?

I know what you mean…it’s sooo frustrating having to wait that extra 2 seconds before i can get around them…so inconsiderate of them.

Let me give you a clue - you know that box just before most traffic lights with pictures of cycles painted on it…

Motorcycling is supposed to be fun, it’s not a race unless you are on a track. Leave earlier, take the long way round and enjoy your passion/hobby.

Hey, cheers clever dick. Wasn’t aware of that. Because EVERY traffic light stop has one of them doesn’t it.

First of all, chill down. There is no point getting angry or frustrated about something so insignificant. As others have said, you are only going to be held up for 2 secs so stop worrying about it. You’ll also find that on most central london roads roads, when you hit the next red, the cyclist will be up alongside you!

Also, you always hear how it’s safer to be in front or behind, not to the side (even for motorbikes)… so if it gives them safety, I’m all for it.

I like this post. Couldn’t of said it better myself.

There must be something in the water, everyone seems quite irate on and off the road, cyclists, riders, car drivers the lot! Time of the month? Hot water bottle and some chocolate will sort you out

Haha this was not an angry post. Merely a minor rant against cyclists  Just as they probably rant about us lot. It’s a war out there don’t you know

Well the fewer people see it that way, the better… It’s about sharing the road with everyone, not trying to claim it for yourself.

I think there’s a show on Channel 4 next week about it being a ‘war on the roads’

And I doubt that anybody here can say that they have never had a bit of road rage. Especially Plum and the white van man!!

I don’t mind when a cyclist does it, they are vulnerable and want to get off ahead of the traffic…but 50cc Vespas! Now there’s a rant I like to have

They’re usually at the front of the line, holding up the cyclists!

I plant my bicycle in front of you, as mentioned above, cause I don’t want to breathe your can’s fumes. I’m up on my pedals before you’re in gear and off about 1 second before the lights change. I don’t hold you up, and to prove that I’ll be there doing the same at every set of lights on your route. I don’t jump reds, though I admit some do, and I shout at them for it.

As I ride both I hope that bikers would see cyclists as similar - we’re both choosing not to cage, we both are massively vulnerable, and most of us do obey the rules of the road. Or do all bikers stick to 30 :stuck_out_tongue:

Stay calm, stay safe, and when you do come across a twat on a bicycle, remember he’s a twat whatever he’s doing…

dear plurker,

not sure which bike do you actually ride, but i beg to disagree on the statement that you’ll be off before i’m into gear.

and compliments on the choice of your nickname.

Plum, nothing in the water just xmas is approaching so you do the math.

Am I correct in assuming that most accidents involving cyclist happen when other road users try to get past or get past then cut across them. If that is correct then cyclists should not be given the box in front of the traffic lights unless its to turn right…surely?:ermm:

If the cyclist is in advanced stop box and a driver is behind them then the driver has to wait for the cyclist to move off and turns left behind him.

If there isn’t an advanced stop box then the car will be alongside the cyclist, both move off at the same time alongside each other and the driver may sideswipe the cyclist whilst turning left if they don’t check properly.

Especially in the case of large vehicles with restricted view, the last place a cyclist wants to be is alongside a left turning vehicle - in front is much safer, where everyon can see them.
