Aghhhhh that’l be me then chunks…got pulled couple of years back and the very nice police officer took my visor off me made me ride home without it…even though i’m not stupid i was riding with it open!
Porky is reading this topic so hopefully will put your minds at rest whether you can, can’t or maybe… if he posts.
‘Tinted’ visors that are legal are actually only lightly tinted and you are able to see your face through them, these will display ‘For Daytime Use Only’
Irridium, mirrored and black visors are illegal.period.
However, it is widely accepted that during bright days they aid the visbility of the rider abd as a Traffic cop i have to look at the overall safety of the rider and anything that heightens safety is a plus in my book…
now, saying that there is nothing stopping one of my colleagues from doing you for it (penalty=£30 non-endorseable penalty) although it is rare…
HOWEVER…wear one in reduced light or at night and you WILL get stopped and fined…have a collision and be found wearing one and it’s deemed you reduced your vision as a result you are getting yourself into some serious bother…
The myth of carrying a clear one gets you out of bother is just that, a myth.
So, to summarise…if your going to use one then use it wisely and never at night.
Cheers for that Del:)
And what about these tinted Fog City things?
It does seem silly that you can stick a dark film on the inside of a clear visor and still be legal:w00t:
no doubt they’d use that as a reason to contest the claim…
If wearing a tinted visor is deemed a contributing factor in a collision then of course they have every right to deny a claim, if you caused it (especially by applying something illegal)
as for inserts , they are not illegal as they are not the visor…
it’s the same as wearing jet black sunglasses under a clear visor, the visor is legal…
but again, have a collision at night and be found wearing sunglasses and your opening that can of wriggly things again…
yes & i would certainly.
but that would be when the sun goes down/conditions.
Ok thats all well and good but as usual is all typical for bikers.
Nothing stopping me driving my car at night with sun glasses on…and no fine!!!
Ok i agree you have to be daft to ride at night with a dark visor, infact i used to use dark tear offs over my clear visor. Now i just carry a clear one around if there is any chance of getting caught out late.
On a seperate issue whats the situation with regards to listening to music while you ride? I use an i-pod on some journeys, is this illegal? Obviously i can drive my car at night with sunglasses on and listen to loud music and not get pulled, so assume that its ok to do so on a bike… thoughts.
yes you can listen to music whilst riding. (As well as use rider to passenger radio , bike to bike radio, use handsfree mobile or listen to sat nav directions).
difficult bit is getting earpieces which will stay in whilst you are riding, some bike riders buy specially designed earpieces for use inside helmets.
don’t have your music too loud when riding as it can mask the sounds of danger around you & if you are riding at speed or long distances remember that excessive noise will damage your hearing & once it’ s gone there’s no way of getting it back!.
Also it depends on what type of music it was if you were stopped.
if the officer does not like those tunes, then yes, a £30 fine can be applied! (comes under failing to comply with music of the law). ![]()
ps: listen to queen, you’ll be fine forever!. ![]()
Thanks for that darryl, i was hopeing that was the case. Now where’s that thrash metal…
wear sunglasses in your car at night and you’ll get nicked if seen. It’s exactly the same.as for music on a bike, no offence at all…i wear an iPod ‘shuffle’ everyday and it’s not illegal (although what i listen to could be deemed as ‘offensive’ by some!!)whistle away!
Darryl,
Good news mate!!
TVP ARE BRINGING BACK THE BIKES!!!
(ok they are BMW’s but i REALLY don’t care!!)
expected June …
Happy days!
(hope your well mate btw)
Scratchin, thanks also for your reply. I too think my choice of music may be offensive also
thrash metal.
i like death metal,…morbid angel.

never mind, just in time for the summer sun though!..:w00t:
thinking of getting a dark tint visor for very sunny days (was completely blinded by glare at one point during my DAS test :ermm:, will risk £30 fine for better safety) but not sure if i can trust the internet visor shops…
any recommendations? i have a shoei xr-1000 and would prefer an official shoei one if possible
cheers
I’ve used the offshore visor shops with no problems at all:D
Now why doesn’t that surprise me? :D:D

cops dont care much day or night about black visors, evan if your riding like a **** doing 3 digit speeds
