The ANPR are technically the LEZ cameras.
I see, that makes sense as I’ve seen a lot of them around in other places around the outskirts of London. I looked out for them today and from what I could see they seem to be rearwards facing (i.e. reading the front number plate)… I suppose there aren’t any motorcycles which are banned from the LEZ… yet!
I’ve updated my post.
I’ve added photos N1, N2 - north acton. And, N3 ,N4 - just before the overpass. They are for 2 ANPR and 2 (what I believe) VECTOR average speed cameras. I’ve also updated the map.
I’ve checked the previous footage and the footage from today to confirm that these cameras were definitely not there before.
P.S. Rem Zuk, you mentioned there were cameras right after the nr. 9 image. But, I assume you meant before, since that is all I found.
Thanks for taking time to share some video stills Slacker, that’s good work!
Thanks Slacker, this thread is becoming an indispensable piece of reference material.
Now I’m off to research other routes from West London to Docklands! With average speed enforcement on the A40 and the conversion of the embankment and lower and upper thames streets to cycle highways I need an alternative if I’m going to keep my ride shorter than the tube journey!
Saw more being installed on the way home last night just as you come off the west way east bound.
Slacker, you’re right, these were exact sets of cameras I was talking about…
Changyammi, even more being installed? Soon there will be no bikes on A40 at all… I am already taking different route as my daily commute is Wembley- Mayfair… Just cannot stand knowing you have to be always on 40mph… No one is is doing that!
Junglizt1210, TheUnforgiven, you are most welcome. Granted, I am doing this for as much as my own benefit as everyone else’s. I use this road daily, so it’s good to have a sitrep of sorts, and the feedback here has already proven useful in keeping it up to date.
Changyammi, I didn’t see anything new today. Are you talking about the exit in the photo #21 or a different one?
Some more bad news. Spotted today another set of those Vector speed cameras just before hanger lane going eastbound (a40). I’ll try to get it on tape tomorrow.
Allright, so basically A40 is pretty much to be avoided by bikes… As I am commuting every day Wembley- Mayfair, I am already using A41… Time wise it is pretty much the same, although a bit more traffic…
I did read somewhere that A40 (well at least a flyover) had 50mph speed limit, and 40mph was introduced only temporarily, while work were being carried out… Sort of 2- 3 years ago…
The flyover limit is 40. When the work was being carried out the limit was reduced from 50 to 30, which was ridiculously slow and needless to say I never saw anyone observe it!! After a while they raised the limit from 30 to 40 and it has stayed since.
On the subject of reduced speed limits, does any one understand the “alleged” logic behind the 30mph limit through the Hanger Lane tunnel? Signs indicate it’s because of reduced lighting but I’ve not noticed any difference, it’s always been pretty dim in there!! Again, never seen anyone respect it, not even the police.
Hanger Lane 30 is unenforceable in my view, because on the westbound side there are two signs, one 40, one 30.
They are within 5 feet of one another.
Alright. So I’ve added #1 gatso and anpr, which I missed earlier. I’ve replaced #3 with the new photo which now has anpr, vector and gatso (before there was only gatso), this is the one I talked in my previous post - situated before the hanger lane tunnel. Finally, I’ve also captured #N5 vector and anpr cameras westbound, right before the overpass same as eastbound.
So, a bit late in the day but I just tore through the area before the Shepherds Bush turn off at 80 into the sun - first time commuting into
London. Are the average speed cameras switched on?
Hi Seeker, I don’t believe so as there are no official signs, also a lot of people are driving about 60 - 70 around A40 . it is tough keeping to 50 even dangerous as we get bored and louse focus .
Thanks mate, I actually think I’ve barrelled through a fixed speed camera at that speed, my own fault I suppose. Will have a look during the return journey :-/
First day commuting in this week and I noticed a few more completed average speed cameras, they don’t seem to be hanging around for the installations. There are now sets out past the Greenford exit, near the fixed speed cameras that are opposite Dunelm Mill. I guess it won’t be too long before the signage starts going up…
To be honest you be had pushed to clock over 40 in the areas they are, if the traffic is at it’s usual pace, lots of it and the traffic lights.
There are maybe two spots where you’d have to slow down, the stretch up to the white city turn off and the bit through gypsy corner.
Have a look below for info on the average speed cameras…

its not legal to put average cameras up without informing the drivers. there are no signs, as per today, 15th may.
How Dare They !
But i presume ignoring the speed limits or road markings is acceptable even though technically illegal …?
