(double post)
I did Greenford to Baker St and back again Monday rush hours and didn’t notice any new cameras or signs
or anyone going slower than normal on the open streatches where it isn’t grid locked.
I’ve just scoured the TFL website and I can’t see any mention of the average speed camera project for the A40 (and they have quite a comprehensive list of projects). The latest News result is an Evening Standard article of Nov 2013. If this was coming or had put in place you know the Evening Standard as a minimum would have had an article about it. So from that little bit of research it doesn’t look like it’s coming yet. Perhaps they shelved it for now.
the blue cameras are traffic cameras to monitor
the only thing going on the A40 at the moment is replacing the not much working gatsos with the very much working digital ones. same as the north circular.
saying so, i can confirm that at least one of those is not doing what it supposed to do, or maybe was switched off that day.
Hi Guys, I got the info from a serving cop friend of mine, he said they were part of the ANPR system, there is a bank of them as you come onto the A40 east bound at the Hoover building and that set pictured earlier after the cross roads at Old Oak road, however I can’t see any after that, certainly not by the flyover by Paddington police station.
its not legal to put average cameras up without informing the drivers. there are no signs, as per today, 15th may.
They’re certainly part of the plan that Tfl announced…
A40 (between the Polish War Memorial and Paddington slip road)
But they can’t just switch them on and commence enforcement without announcing it. More likely they’ll turn them on and let them run with no enforcement so they can demonstrate increased compliance post the announcement.
London has multiple ANPR systems, police, CC, and the low emissions zone.
The Westway part is a funny anomaly …
A six-lane motorway including hard shoulders esah side and fairly straight - in Germany you would be allowed to do 155mph down there - or more if your bike was fast enough.
A proper MOTORway - no peds, no cyclists , no crossings, no buildings etc etc etc … but during “Cuddly Ken’s” reign the spped limit was first dropped to 60mph and then Ken’s blaket maximum 40mph speed was laid upon for all roads in the capital ( amaziing the M1 and M11 didm’t get it at the London end.
Ridiculous and unjustified!
However the Westway seems to be a real bee in the bonnet for the authorities,
Now with the cameras we will have to dooodle along in 2nd - on a road whose specification was designrd in the '50s to take 150 mph no problem!
The 40 mph limit on the flyover is supposed to be temporary, as they are allegedly carrying out repairs on the flyover.
Can’t remember if it is going back to 60 or 50, I think 50.
I’ve never seen anyone do 40mph on the flyover- almost everyone does 60-70.
Most bikes do 80+.
It does have a lot of accidents though- particularly that bit where traffic from Shepherds Bush joins the Eastbound traffic at the start of the flyover- I reckon there are 2 a month.
The speed limit was a reaction to the debacle that is the Hammersmith flyover I thought?. The construction of the flyovers isn’t ageing well and proper repairs are being put off for obvious reasons.
For anyone interested the Westway was built using ‘innovative’ techniques:
http://www.theclash.org.uk/Westwaypage.htm
The use of precast concrete slabs held together by tight steel cables was new. De icing was meant to be achieved by heating the road by electricity cable so the steel cables weren’t corrosion proof - they didn’t need to be as salt wouldn’t be used. Only the electric heating wasn’t used so now there’s worry (well founded in Hammersmith flyover cables) the steel is corroding as there’s now lots of salty water about!
They’re in the deep brown smelly stuff here. I wonder if they’re so worried they’re making sure the traffic is slowed all the time across the whole length?
Allright, I know it is an old topic and there are no new signs on this road (or at least i did not notice them), but there are definitely few new cameras! Eastbound, just before the turn to White city, facing rear… Quite high up, two yellow cameras.
I’ve recently (about 2 weeks ago) captured my commute on a drift cam. I went eastbound from Perivale to Paddington using A40. Here is a list of cams I’ve noticed (including some westbound ones). Also, note, my camera expertise is limited to a quick google search, so the camera descriptions might not be entirely accurate:

I think the ones you list as “Average Speed” are ANPR. The blue ones definitely are trafficmaster which just provide traffic jam info.
I believe you are correct, thanks. I’ve edited my post.
SLACKER, you missed one set… Between 19 and 20, just before going on the ramp, left hand side, quite high up- 2 rear facing cameras
In the photo 19, you can see both cameras 19ANPR and 20SpeedCurb, but I’m afraid I don’t see any other cameras between them. I’ve even checked the video footage.
I also don’t see any ramps.
Could you perhaps be referring to the overpass, and the photos 20 and 21 instead?
Sorry for misunderstanding, long day without any sleep… Yes, I was referring to the overpass and yes indeed, it was suppose to be between images 20 and 21 (I looked at the number on top of the image rather than below…).
All right, also updating information a bit…
So there are those brand new cameras between pictures 21 and 21 eastbound, I think they appeared less than 2 weeks ago… As well, if you would check now, just after intersection shown in image Nr. 9 eastbound (would be exactly in your image), there are same two new cameras (as between 20 and 21). First time I saw those was yesterday, so they must be very recent…
All in all, I guess A40 soon will be dead 40mph…
So are the new ANPR cameras being deployed to catch tax evaders (i.e. as a result of scrapping the tax disc)? Or do we think they might be used to enforce average speeds?
Saw some new high vis cameras that would be behind you on pic 21 today. I can’t remember seeing them there yesterday. Look like average rear facing ones. No sign of any others though.
