Yamaha XT660X - a few facts

The Yamaha XT660X

This bike is taking on like a fever worldwide, sales in Uk alone have matched Fazers (FZ6) and are catching up with R6’s (according to George White sales reps).

So why is that? We all know the bike gets a slating from the hardcore supermoto fans for being too heavy compared to KTM’s Husky’s or Berg’s, and we know its not exactly a racing machine.

But then… why is it that this bike sells so much?

All the people that I know that owns one, talk about their experience with this bike as one of reliability, comfort, inexpensive services (6000 miles intervals), and major smile factor before, during and after any ride, excellent town bike for both commuting and all round value for money.

This is not happening just in London, mind you, Europe seems to be addicted to them too. I know, cause in my forum for example, after only 81 days from it’s opening (May the 9th) we reached 700 members worldwide, the top countries in terms of memberships are: Uk / Italy / Greece, Sweden, Denmark, South Africa, OZ and NZ. There is definately a great interest in them and I think you should all test ride one and see why so many people are smitten with the XT660X.

Or ask me nicely and I’ll let you have a go

Pitty there slow

Come out with us on the next ride and make your mind up then.

I feel I have to correct you.

It’s “They’re slow”

No probs mate, get em to lose about 30KG and they might be slightly entertaining

I shall escort you to highbeach and introduce you to the visordown motard lot erm and see how fast it is then

Buck, if they intropouce you to the “vidordown” ladies, don’t forget to bring nail varnish, hair curlers and plenty lip gloss… just to be “in” wirth the crowd… oh and… white socks.

He he,

Pete do you think they need an introduction to Dave Bean and Moto! You’ll see! haha

How embarrassing!

“This bike is taking on like a fever worldwide, sales in Uk alone have matched Fazers (FZ6) and are catching up with R6’s (according to George White sales reps).”

Can you just check your arm for puncture marks

Although the XT is a very competent bike for it’s niche market, it will never be able to compete with a mainstream bike like a Fazer, or the ever popular and fashionable R series.

I work near a George whites, and have been in there. If sales are matched to the Fazer how come there are five times as many Fazers in the showroom as there are XT660’s? Not to mention R6’s. Also despite seeing plenty of the above bikes on the roads I have not actually seen an XT660 yet, or are they being bought by collectors to be stored in sealed garages?

I suspect the sales rep was exaggerating to you as you have one. If you had a Dragstar he would have probably said “Did you know sales of the Dragstar are matching sales of Fazers; cruisers are the future, and now I have massaged your ego - fancy buying some stuff from us?”

As opposed to the kagool wearing, thick spectacled ‘London Bikers’ who whip out their trusty notepad to jot down the numberplates of any nasty motorcyclists.

Good to see so many tards selling, the more the better

But lets be honest the reason why they are selling is cos they are made by a main stream Jap company and people feel safe buying them. Lets be honest most people that buy tards come from Jap sportsbikes and in the main the’re too scared to buy a KTM, Husky, Berg etc, cos they think that they will go pop within a week. Personally I think thats a bit sad cos it ain’t true (apart from the berg:laugh but thats peoples perception. If the LC4 was made by Yamaha, I’m sure you would see the same thing happen. Basically most people are too scared to not buy jap bikes, so when the see one of these new fangled Supermotos by Yamaha they think Oh it gotta be good. I think the best example of this is the fact that MZ have been making basically the same bike as the XTX for years and no fecker brought it cos its an MZ, even though its the same engine, just as reliable, cheaper and prob lighter too, but it wasn’t made by the japs

Another example that highlights the buy safe factor is how many people who own XTX have owned motards before? Not many I would reckon.

Personally I think the XT is prob a great commuter moto, but it is wayyyyyyyy to heavy, its almost the same weight as my old Blade and it is cronically fuggly

The Japs also play safe when it comes to street tards to keep that reliability, remember the XTX is 660cc and turns out less power than nearly all the other street tards which have smaller engines as well as weighing approx 25kg more than the whats considered heavy for a tard LC4. Compared to a WR or Berg your talking prob 50kg or more

There is only 1 Yamaha SM I would ever consider and thats the WR450, now your talking

For all you XTX owners good on you for getting a tard. I know I take the piss but thats what tard owners do. Long may the XTX sell and hopefully the owners will buy a proper tard next time

Ahh I thought you joined VD and got laughed off it

I’ve always found it interesting to note that all the XTX’s stick togther a bit like Harleys Must be a slow old tractor thing

Hello mate, welcome to the forum phew its someone who don’t ride an XTX

Mornin’

I’m blue through and through, and I think the XTX is a competent bike - for the right person. Just not me . Put it on a diet, give it another 10 bhp, perhaps put some YZ plastics on it, then maybe, just maybe

According to the Motorcycle industry association which has the main bike co.s as its members, the ytd figures for new supermoto registrations show the DRZ400 SM being the new bike of choice. HTH.

I don’t wear white socks by the way!

Oi, there’s nowt wrong with nail varnish, lip gloss and hair curlers

oh, wait, erm, hang on, thats cos i am a burd

Straight to the point, check the yamaha uk web site ,the xtx is not being marketed a supermoto, but a street moto,we xtx owners are not blind to that fact that the bike is overweight and underpowered compared to a true supermoto!.

Since belonging to xt660.com we have found a lot of riders from sports bikes coming over to the xtx and saying they have been very surprised at how much fun they have had since riding the bike ,now you could say they have not experienced a true super moto ,light weight lots of power and so on,but how many people buy a bike straight off and without any research !! not many ,people want reliabilty, Coupled with the riding postion and good engine (and it is a good engine)it is a very competent bike, many of our members have toured on the xtx ,how many of you supermoto riders also own a second bike for maybe their day to day ride to work or take the other half for a ride, the xtx does all that, the usual comments of reliabilty, service and running costs also crop up,this is what people want in the real world ,a reliable easy to ride bike and a bit of fun at the weekends.Isnt it all just a bit of dick swinging ,supermotos, very nice but we know our limits,we enjoy the xtx for what it is,each to their own.

.

I agree with al of that 100%. My SM is a toy, I want another bike (ideally a sportsbike) to go with it. The XTX is fantastic at what it does (like the KTM Duke, or LC4 SM’s, or the MZ, etc.), but no way would it’s sales be anywhere near Fazer or R6 sales. Too small a target market.

As I said mate. Nothing wrong with the XTX as a street tard

I think the tongue in cheek responses are in reply to a certain someone and their endless XTX is best posts

As a do it all everyday tard the XTX is hard to beat but certainly not alone. The KTM LC4, Duke II, SMC, CCM R30, Husky 610, MZ Baggy and Matiff etc are all as capable to 1 degree or other. I used to commute a 60 mile round trip on my 625SMC every day pretty happily and put 13,000 trouble free miles on my KTMs with no problems. As I said I’ve nothing against the XTX, just think that a lot of people don’t even consider the others cos they ain’t jap bikes which is sad

I’m sure that theres a lot of fun to be had on an XTX lets be honest even the most hardcore CRF Fo’ Fiddy ain’t gonna make you a riding good and it will still be blown into the reeds on anything but very twisty rds by most sportsbikes. Thats the beauty of tards they give you massive kicks at much lower speeds which is why I brought 2

As for the dick swinging sort yourself out! Its customary for SM riders to slag all other makes, its in the rules

Well, it makes a change from studded bike’s now doesn’t it
