Yamaha XJ600

Would a Yamaha XJ600N (not diversion) be a good bike for someone who is hopefully passing their test this thursday?

I’ve found a '98 whose looking for about £300 but needs a bit of work and T+T

How much is a typical restriction? Could a home mechanic do it themself?

Sorry for all the questions, I had a search but couldn’t really find much useful info on suitability for new riders or how to restrict stuff

They’re fine, if a bit unexciting.Easy handling, easy power delivery, easy to maintain (get the drift here ?)
Brakes aren’t very strong, but the '98 model has twin discs (earlier ones only had a single one) - caliper strip and HH pads make a discernible difference.
The 600N is a better bike than the faired version, IMHO - gearing is slightly lower so it feels perkier.
Restricting them is easy - and can be easily fitted at home.

Good place to go for advice is :

Loads of knowledge on there, and there may be someone with restrictors to sell…

Brilliant, thanks.

Unexciting is fine for now, I find my TW plenty quick enough still - Im on a self-imposed speed and power curfew, I want to learn to be a decent rider before I get something stupidly fast. It’s one of the reasons I’m doing restricted over DAS.

But since seeing that I’ve looked on eBay and you can get a proper working one with tax etc for about £500 or £600, which is what it would cost me to buy and do that one up anyway. I think I’ll keep looking around. Cheers
