I could be driving along and at least once a day the bike seems to cut out as im changing gears. Now im not sure if its me missing the change or if its something wrong with the bike. Every time it happens the clutch is pulled and im ready to go up or down so i have to press the ignition button to get it going again.
Is it me or the bike? Im hoping it just me missing the change but ive never really done it before and it happens often now!!!1 :o(
It’s probably something really simple to do with the clutch, clutch cable, clutch switch, chain tension, chain wear, sprocket wear etc. Clearly something needs adjustment and a quick fettle with a knowledge of whats what will reveal all and why. The why is the important bit as you don’t just want to cure the symptom.
If I were a gambling man I’d wager on one of the above.
When did it last have a proper service :ermm:
Could be worth booking it in for a service and winter check up with Dr Scorch
I had this problem on my GSR, most commonly when changing down, never did get to the root cause, got rid of the problem by selling the bike back to the dealer I bought it from.
be interested to know what Scorch manages to identify as the issue.
Thanks for your help Lads, I have been in contact with Scorch and will have a scoot up to him during the week hopefully. It got serviced 6 months ago Art from the dealers.
Oddly enough I’ve been looking at one or two used mo’cycles lately and have had to walk away from too many due to poor levels of servicing, the worst examples seem to be those with ‘full service history’.
Just this Friday a ‘full main dealer service history’ specimin was found to have barely 2mm of tread on the squared off tyres, even less friction material on the rear pads, enough play in the chain and wear on the rear sprocket to raise serious doubts on the 12 months MOT it came with. While I was negotiating £500 off the asking price to cover that little lot I noticed a frayed clutch cable and enough was enough I walked away.
Wasn’t fit to be on the sales forecourt let alone on the road.
We’re going to have a look at this today, if it’s not the idle being too low or something to do with the clutch what would be your next port of call??
How far do you start stripping things down before you say it needs professional help??
I think it is a Battery related problem, i’ve checked all the mechanical possibilities and it doesn’t seem to be anything mechanical. The fault only happens first thing in the Morning (when the battery has started loosing power)
What happens is, the bike rides as normal but within the first minute of riding the bike looses all power and burbles to a halt (not like a jolt stop of a stall) the dash goes off completely (i simulated a stall situation and the dash stayed on) it doesn’t happen when the bike has been running for a while as the battery has had a charge put into it so for me it seems like the battery could be on the way out. The Bike has an alarm on it so my guess would be that the Alarm is draining the power overnight, it has enough power to start but when running it hasn’t the power to sustain all the electrics in the first minute of the ride and then dies. once the bike is up to temperature it has put enough charge into the system to power the bike.
If the battery has enough power to start the engine on a cold and frosty morn then the charging system should kick in and boost the battery voltage not drain it further.
To be sure get all scientific and put a multimeter across the battery terminals to see what is happening to the battery voltage. Three tests are required
pre frosty cold start up >12.4v
engine running at <1,000 revs on tickover >11.5v
engine running at >4,000 revs 13v - 14v
