Yamaha service under warranty

Hi All,
Newbie question! My Yamaha city still has a year left on the warranty.if I get it serviced by non Yamaha dealer warranty is invalid. Is it worth going to a main dealer( mine is expensive ,takes weeks to book a slot) or is the warranty provided by Yamaha pretty worthless? I’ve had the bike for a year with no problems so far. I’ve used metropolis up to now but what’s the Yamaha dealer like I. Blackfen? I’m se London boy!
Thanks!

Dunno about dealers but as long as official Yamaha parts are installed by a qualified mechanic then it won’t invalidate your warranty

What is the service schedule?

Get yourself a workshop/service manual and do it yourself, it’s probably little more than an oil n filter change. If it’s up for a spark plug and/or air filter just get the parts in and crack on with it.

The bigger question is who’s ever had what work carried out under warranty?

When I knew absolutely nothing about bikes other than riding one, I had a few warranty issues with BMW which they did; begrudgingly… The irony is its because I knew nothing that put me in that position! :w00t:

I agree with Art - the quicker you learn about servicing your own machine; the better!

I’ve started down this route gonna split the service into set tasks just changed oil and filter (purchased torque wench and filter thingy as a strap wont fit) and looking at the gunk on it the filter hadn’t been changed for a while. Ordered a carbtune gizmo so plugs and sync over the next couple of weeks then lube jobs. May need so help with checking bearings etc if you’re offering - couldn’t find a contact number for ATS - Art Tech Services:).

Thanks Art. I’m up to 7000 miles so it’s due a third service. Every 3500 miles. I’m just a knowledge boy so I will hopefully just need the bike for another 2 years max by which time I’ll have done about 20,000 miles. I hear you re servicing but I’m rubbish at hands on stuff and just need a reliable bike. From the sounds of what people are saying any mechanic using Yamaha parts is fine. I probably won’t get much for the bike when I sell it with 20000 on the clock anyway. And is the difference in price between local reliable garage and main dealer worth it? Presumably parts aren’t going to cost that much anyway? Bike was £1800 new!

Thanks unlucky Saxon! I’m a knowledge boy and just need the bike for another two years hopefully! Even if the warranty was invalidated surely any parts will be fairly cheap. Difference between reliable local mechanic and main dealer price was is considerable. I reckon I’d still save even if warranty was invalidated? I’m rubbish at hands on stuff so don’t fancy servicing it myself!

Thanks Brains_t. I’m just a simple knowledge boy who’s rubbish at hands on stuff like servicing and between work, learning and revising I don’t have the time. Thanks though.

You may find Sondels in Blackfen cheaper than Metropolis. You could even try and negotiate a price with them as you’re doing the miles quickly some of the jobs may not be necessary.

Thanks. Yeah I saw them. They are a bit nearer to me too.

Yamaha warranty will likely be invalidated if you go elsewhere for servicing as the Block Exemption regs only apply to cars as I understand it.

That said, after owning quite a few cars in recent years (8 in 8 years I think… most of which were either new or nearly new), I’m now of the opinion that the manufacturer’s warranty is often more of a hassle than a help. You’re tied in to over-priced but often poorly done service work, just to keep a warranty which they will try to wriggle out of given any excuse. You often have to wait to get the car booked in, have to travel further to get to the main dealer compared to your local guy, and heaven help you if you exceed the mileage allowance.

Over the past 8 years, the small number of repairs I’ve needed under warranty could easily have been paid for myself with the savings made by using a trusted independent garage for service work.
