Would you ride in the snow?

Got to ride home to London from Ashford tomorrow evening since I get kicked out of the house… and I have to go to my mate’s gig. I’ve done it before on a 6R and had to ride it gingerly! Now i’ve got to get a 929 Blade up the M20, around the M25 and to Edgware… WITH full luggage! Fun times :stuck_out_tongue:

Until last year, my bike was my only form of transport for the preceding 20-odd years, so I’ve ridden is snow a fair bit.Worst snow I’ve ridden in was after a christmas do when I stayed at a mate’s house.Overnight around a foot of snow fell and I had 25 miles on the A34 to cover. The road empty, with only a few police cars dotted along it but at the time I had a KDX175 enduro bike, and it was a fantastic laugh.Spent a lot of the time zipping up and down the verges
Fell off a few times, but didn’t damage the bike apart from a few scratches.Had proper knobblies on, too, which helped.

My commute is 45 mins by bike. Never tried public transport but for those who live near enough the same neck of the woods as me it takes 1 hour 1/2. And that is on a day without disruption.

It’s a tricky decision.

Its just snowed heavy near the ace and its going to come down more during the night…

I guess if it doesn’t turn to ice I’ll be out in the morning on my 125…

Thanks for your help.

Good luck titz!

So where were you all this morning? Brockley to Vauxhall I only saw two other bikes. More after that though, mainly scooters.

I dunno, bit of snow and everyone turns into a fair weather biker

Rode back from East Ham through Blackwall tunnel last night at around 8.30 - the snow was falling consistently and was sticking to the footpaths. It was a bit of a menace with snow all over my visor - very blurry, fairly dodgy!!! but the roads were clear of snow - just wet.

I guess, you just need to apply some logic. If the roads are clear of snow… then its fine. Its when conditions are like they are this morning - snow accumulated everywhere apart from where car tyre tracks are. not much room to play with!

Bike stayed home today :o( - no need to take the risk unless you really have no other choice!

Im hoping the snow will clear a little by this evening!!

I drove in this morning and everything was fine till I turned off the A3 after Guildford when it got slippy. With respect to the bike I wouldn’t consider it. You can very easily injur yourself in a low speed drop (broken arms etc), and if you have a fairing then it will be both painful and expensive.

Like other have said it depends on what you’re riding. Sports bikes and snow don’t work. I would ride in the snow by choice but have been caught in it (clear road stopped for petrol came out 4inchs of snow and still falling). The main problem is the ice under the snow.

I consider myself to be an all weather rider, but I left the bike at home today, better safe then sorry.

Your serious replies have left mine looking flippant :frowning:

I was lucky this morning as my journey involved TFL maintained roads, so they were well gritted.

I did my 5 day intensive course during a snowy week last year - even took my test in -4 tempratures.

It was hairy but if you can learn and pass without binning it then nothing should scare you!

I rode in the snow last night… Was fine on the main roads, was quite nice actually  Then it became instantly icy when I got near home. Turned right at a mini roundabout and 180’d onto the ground. Kept it running, stood it up, and walked it the rest of the way! So, no. I’m not going to ride in the snow I don’t think. Without salt my local roads are like an ice rink!

not when i have a better option of heated leather seats in a 4x4 pickup

hmmmm toasty!

Used to commute from Mitcham to West Acton on me old RD250 - about 35 years ago, when my foul weather riding kit consisted of my old man’s bicycle cape! Rode that with snow round my nuts and until my knees turned blue! Fell off so many times - my advice? If there is any way possible to avoid going by bike when it’s snowy/icy - don’t, it WILL end in tears!

I mean’t ,of course, don’t rather that avoid not, you know what I mean, it’s half past bottle of wine here!

M20, middle lane, 87-90, 5k revs in top is where it’s at.Made very little difference to the journey time from Ashford to Colindale! I almost folded the front when I applied the brakes major stylee in Hendon on a back road! That was hair raising since I always thought I’d lose the rear!Fun times. If anybody was in Archway at about 5PM on a Yammy R6R, I’m sorry I didn’t stop to help you out with your, what I presume was, your fuel/electrical shutdown issue! keep it rubber side down… especially so if ur on a litre twin!:stuck_out_tongue:

Set of from Staines to Ealing the other night at around 10:30pm ish via M25/M4 - snow had been falling for a while, but the main roads were clear.

It’s not something I like doing, but not much different to riding in the wet (until you hit the residential roads where no cars have been down - then it’s the ginger crawl into the driveway hoping you don’t drop it at the last minute!)

Good luck - be safe.

Snow and ice are not, in my opinion, fun while on a big bike. I’ve done it from necessity, but avoid if at all possible.I left work at 1am on Friday morning … into a blizzard. The bike couldn’t find traction and was fishtailing across the car park - at which point I put it back in the garage and went to a hotel.

Going home (finally!) later that evening, it was okay in town but slippery as anything further out. Coming up Haverstock Hill, I could feel the temperature drop lower still and snow started lightly settling. At this point, a black cab coming the other way decided to perform a U-turn - without looking first, or indicating - directly in front of me. Luckily, I had clocked that there was something unusual about his speed and positioning and guessed he was going to do something mental, so was able to avoid without having to slam on the anchors too hard. At the lights a little further on, I caught up and told him - politely - that of all nights this was not the one to pull in front of a bike like that. And - bless his little cockney nazi heart - all he could think to say back was a 20-second, foaming-mouthed explosion of obscenities.

Aren’t people fascinating?

What a b*stard taxi driver.

No, I wouldn’t ride if I had any other options… if I had to I’d ride my 125 instead of my big bike.

I have no issues riding on the gritted and clear roads, but the last 5 minutes to my front door, uphill and ice covered with snow, would be stupid. It’s noticeable in the car, no way I’d want to risk it on the bike. That and I feel the cold very badly.
