although Ive fitted heated grips the number that i have turned them on can be counted on the fingers of one hand ( :Whistling: )
the times that i have turned them on have been when it was snowing :w00t: a couple of time on my way back home and when ive missed the gym.
Its not cause im hard or that i have warm Greek blood running in me
Most days start off with a 2 min ride to my local gym and a session of weight training. its then a 30-40mi ride into london.
The more i think about it the more im sure that the days that i havent been to the gym i find the weather colder.
So i have come to the following theory (EUREKA!? ):
When i have gone to the gym my body core is higher, added to this weight training (or any exercise) rises the heartrate and so the bloodflow.
Having a warm core means that my body doesnt concentrate blood/heat at the center of me (where all the vital organs are) but allows the warm blood to running all the way through me - to my fingers!
So I end up not feeling the cold as much. I suppose that if my journey was longer I eventually would cool down and start feeling the cold.
I would be interested to hear your opinions and if anyone else has noticed this
Well, I never go to the gym - and my hands are always freeking freezing, even with the heated grips, so maybe there’s something in it.
However, I fear our comparison is invalid as for all sceintific comparisons you should only change one factor (sorry - the teacher in me coming out) and as I am not Greek, we can’t be certain which of the factors causes the different responses…
Also, could just be that my gloves aren’t winter gloves and I am too tight to buy another pair?
That’s a logical theory.
I’d say that heated grips are similar to a food supplement (multi-vitamins, Omega oil etc), if we are in good enough condition, we probably won’t need them.
Although what keeps us from being in that ‘good condition’ varies wildly - age, fitness, body temperature prior to riding, genetics etc.
I’m glad I have heated grips, I have bad circulation even when I was going to the gym.
im young, go to the gym many times a week etc and still get freezing hands with winter gloves and heated grips. i have to walk far enough to get to my bike and get boiling hot inside my winter gear, so my core temp is well up when i leave for a journey.
after years of windsurfing all year round I believe it is all down to the increased blood flow due to exercise, I never found my hands cold during or after sailing only before, my personal minimums were 6C sea and 3C air with 20 knot wind, did it a couple of times (slow learner) found I was coldest the day I just hunkered up in the van and didn’t move, exercise gets the blood moving, extremities get hot, all is good with the world, the problem with bikes is that you really don’t work that hard (unless racing/going bonkers) so your metabolism shuts down the extremities to keep your core temp up.
Or…company car , cup of hot coffee in the holder, heating on full with vents directed to automatically blow dry my just washed hair.
Never go to the gym but still arrive at work warm and dry…spooky eh ?
