With respect to number plate size…it’s the law, like driving on the left so we could just get on with it. If you feel strongly about number plate size you could arrange protests and try to over throw the govrnment…or you could just get a fancy exhaust instead.
OK, having discussed the issue with my father (a copper) I can come up with an answer as to why number plates are a certain size.
The Police all over the UK use a unified ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Reader) system that can read your plates and then give you the lowdown on that car, it’s history, insurance, tax etc. It’s how the plod know when to pull you.
The ANPR that is used is set up to work with the legal size and font of lettering, and the size of numberplate that is currently applicable in law in the UK. As such, if the plate is too small, the ANPR can’t read it, and as far as the police are concerned, you may as well be masking your plates (an offense), which is why you get pulled and get a fine.
Combined with that is our extensive use of cameras to police our lovely roads, which again, set up to read the legal size plates at a certain distance etc etc.
POINTS TO NOTE: My father is not a traffic officer, this may be slightly wrong in places.
He got his pad out and was about to start writing but I managed to talk my way out of it and got a bollocking! That’s twice in two weeks I’ve been pulled by the fuzz and given an ear full. I’m going to change my plate now, not worth spending £60 for nothing.
jeez, i’ve never had a problem with my plate, even when pulled by plod, and many a time i’ve sat at the light near mine with traffic cops up my arse n nothing, the joy of having a base right near you, but i’ve got my normal size one for wales so no worriews there ang
