Just interested (for unscientific research purposes) to see whether people habitually wear earplugs and if so what type.
Not around town as the noise levels aren’t high enough, but if I’m going to be doing 50+ then always.
I usually wear foam ones, I do have a custom made set which cost £60 but find the EAR foam ones more comfortable & just as effective.
You need an option for ‘Yes - but better than foam/disposable ones’
Foam ones because I get them free from work and if I got custom made plugs, I’d lose them in a week.
Around town I didn’t used to bother but I found it was a good habit to get into so I don’t forget when I go somewhere they’re required. It’s automatic whenever I get on the bike now.
Same as Pat, yes but not in town
Foam for me, but very tempted to get some custom ones for listening to music on long motorway journeys
Yup , always.
Although I think the vibration through the jaw bone causes more damage , but thats a whole different debate.
I wear normal headphones… So am I a no?
No, never.
Have a bag of the foam disposables somewhere, unless I’ve disposed of them. Tried them and couldn’t get on with things in my ear, possible due to the fact I’ve had hearing issues my entire life. think it was being a DJ rather than riding which has resulted in my 20 odd years of tinnitus.
Never heard of that before, would be interested if you have any pointers for info on the subject?
No option for - No i listen to music.
As I said totally unscientific…
As a guide if it’s a Yes then any of the 2 yeses would do!

Hmmn. I wear the orange 37db ones as I find them a much better fit than the fatter 39db yellow ones.

If I’m riding for two weeks all day long (ie a roadtrip) then I have to stop wearing them due to the pain they cause in my ear. But fine for a week or so.
Have a Google for bone conduction , I dont have anything specific to point you to just remember a conversation a while back.
I don’t find the noise levels on my bike to ever get loud enough to warrant earplugs. I do wear earplugs at night (the yellow variety shown above) as I live next to a railway line and close to a road where you get lots of police etc sirens, all night. On the bike I prefer to hear what’s going on around me, especially sirens.
I wear custom ones all the time. I only really riedout though. I don’t do much riding in town.
No
Don’t like anything to restrict my hearing.
yep always.
I wear the yellow 39db ones… and now that you reminded me i need to order some more
I always thought that this will restrict noise to much and I wont hear what is behind me. Wrong.
If you have an iPhone or Android please download fancy decibel application and check how much noise motor generates (or your travel in traffic)
Here is handy table http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Noise/ as well here the hear loss depending on noise level over period of time http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/noise/signs.htm
So back to topic, personally I’m using 3m 1100, I found them good enough and cheap enough to not wear one pair for ages (this may cause ear infection). Takes me few times to find the perfect way to fit them now is quick and easy and difference is huge. No ringing/whistling noise after long rides, a nice sound of engine instead of wind, and I’m still able to hear every word my next door neighbour and tune my guitar
@Nic - This will cut noise up to 37dB so if it is 100dB after wearing them shall be 63dB in the perfect world so it is not like you don’t hear anything.
I would like to have personalized ones but still this is slightly above my pay-check (for example UE-18).
R
Yes custom ones and I listen to music and go on the phone whilst riding.
