tonight had a little scare with kids hanging around my garage while I was working on the bike. they were pleasant enough but who knows who they’ll talk to.
so I’m thinking I need more than just the standard lock on my garage. it’s an up-and-over type door and I don’t know whether to go for something like this which is easy to fit but more obvious:
or this which would be trickier to fit but less showy:
my point being, if someone sees a big lock on the door, they know that there’s something inside worth stealing.
Got the Enfield bolts on mine, easy to fit but personally think 2 pairs would be more effective - top and bottom on each side. This depends on the size and weight of your door though, lighter ones “could be” easier to bend/pop open with a bar. Good option of you need to open from either side.
I fitted something similar to this as gates on the inside

Don’t trust anyone! I would assume they talk. Increase the security! Shields up, phasers to full power!
Run 240v through the garage door and video outside.
There are some really good Garage Alarm Systems out there at the Moment and they aren’t even that Expensive. The one i was looking at recently even had GSM Facility so it text your phone when there was an alarm activation.
If you have internal access, other than just the garage door, locks on the inside. You’re quite right, if there are massive locks on the outside there is something in there worth stealing. Best of luck to them getting the bikes going though
Keeping a low profile is a form of security, i.e. if it can’t be seen it can’t be targeted. It’ll get seen at some point of course but no point drawing attention to it with lots of external security.
I have a hasp and staple and a padlock on mine, top centre, BUT, whilst the security looks fairly minimal, they are top quality kit, made of very good materials. not at all showy or overly large, but as effective as anything that shouts, in bright yellow, I have expensive things inside.
Just to note that padlocks at the top didn’t work around our way- they just levered up the bottom, bending the door. Some people put a padlock on the bottom and they worked out how to fold back the corner of the door - probably not enough to get a bike out of but certainly enough to steal tools. The best option seemed to be a padlock on each side at the bottom or a higher quality door.
thanks guys. I’ll order the Enfield bolts and see how that goes.
Tell them what needs to be fixed on every bit of them, I’m certain they’ll move for easier targets
