The my camera is better than your camera debate rages on in another thread so thought I would start a new one.
Right, what I wanna know is what would be the best digital SLR for a complete fuckwit like me?
I used to be into photograghy big time over twenty yrs ago, but alas, things have moved on somewhat. Would a grand be enough to get me a decent set up? Gonna use it for the bike night out/track day/holiday snap thing. Basically general usage.
I like the idea of one that will do the rapid continuous shot thingy.
In a word, yes. Easily. Just like bikes, we all like to show loyalty and our admiration for our choice in manufacturers, but they all do the same thing, with subtle differences. There’s a wide range of cameras out there that would suit you, but I guess it comes down to two main brands, Cannon and Nikon.
A very good resource, and one that’s helped me a hell of a lot is Ken Rockwell’s site. He’s a big camera geek, but explains stuff in a very down to earth manner and has experience in both Nikon and Cannon:
Top to bottom is cost and functionality, the D70s is the revised model of what I have. The D50 would probably be a good place to start, as it’s the cheapest, but doesn’t lack punch, and can take all the lenses the others can, so if you want to trade up in the future, you could do so easily and cost-effectively.
Hey Pups. Calumet hire out kit so if you want to see what suites you best then perhaps have a play with one for a weekend first. You might even be able to leverage the hire cost against the price of the camera
And anyone else (Jay’s allowed as it’s his ‘ball’) spells CANON as CANNON and I’ll shoot them with a bloody BIG Cannon, them smote them around the head with my Canon until they remember.
Touchy? Moi?
Hehe
Perhaps you can play with my Canon’s in return for assisting with my chain dilemma.
Frankly, and all leg-pulling aside, they are all much of a muchness. Nikon and Canon are the two main players, but that really only matters if you intend expanding the basic kit greatly, as more 3rd party stuff will be made for these two brands.
It’ll boil down to spec and price on the day you go looking. I’ll be happy to advise if need be, as I’m sure will all others.
Bit like the poster, used to like my photography but other things took priority. Other things still take priority but I bought a Nikon D70 and a couple of lenses. It was bought pure and simple for some happy snapping of various things really. Well so far I am dead pleased with the results, when I can actually get my hands on the thing, thats prise it away from the other half, I have had some reasonable results and hope to do much better. The other half seems to have a reasonable eye for it all as well and has taken some pretty good snaps. For a beginner to SLR’s, I highly recommend it. It may not be the best, I don’t care, I am happy that it does what I need with my limited ability.
