On sunday afternoon, as most of you may remember, it was very wet. I was surprised that my bike kept loosing grip on every single drain and white paint. I know I should not be riding over them, but it is painfully difficult.
And don’t forget diesel, leaves pedestrians, tourist, drivers on phones…
resit ya das then !
Were you really suprised? I’ve only been riding 3 weeks and I know it’s to be expected!
My bike keeps losing grip on pedestrians too, awful slippy they are!
Hehehe, must try that.
Try a different tyre for your bike. I had a lot of scary moments with Dunlops, once I had Bridgestone fitted, I didn’t slip at all. Never thought a rear tyre could make that much difference.
Shell-Grip’em I say.
Avast!
Yeah check your tyres - pressures and wear and then look up on the interent about what other people think of the tyres you are using. Look up to see what people have fitted to your type of bike - it all makes a difference…
But don’t swerve round 'em either, when you’re going in a straight line that is, cos you’ll be more likely to fall over in a swerve than if you just ride straight over them. Nasty so-and-so’s the are on a bend though…
Don’t worry, you’ll get plenty of practice over the next few months.
So are you saying when its dry you DO ride over that lot…bumpy ride is it?
1st Rule for winter riding…take it easy then you will be around to enjoy summer riding!!!
I find that tourists and pedestrians have quite a lot of grip when you ride over them
I found dunlops poop on my CB1300 in the wet… Bridgestone BT020’s on the CB1300 are mucho better (for my bike/riding) got BT-010’s on my firestorm and they seem pretty good in the wet too
Find out what other people use on the same bike as you
My gloves are still wet from riding on Sunday !
Did the same myself filtering on Monday evening, back tyre slid out on a white line, **** the life outta me
Won’t be doing that anytime soon on my new bike, especially in this weather, good advice about the type of tyre and pressure though, must check that when I pick it up …
Ride Safe !

get good tyres, and use the torque of the engine more in the rain as in i will be in a higher gear so the bike is at lower revs but not so low its jerky.
as you have only just past your test, you will find all this out in time.
tyres for 125’s skinny tyres are hard to get good fitted unless you ask for a good make.
but dont worry about drain covers you will soon learn to miss them if you can and white lines, even a lot of sports bikes with good tyres do thisas the lines are slippy anyway in the rain.
so dont panic and stay relaxed
as the temps start to drop/wet weather, run a couple of psi lower than you would in warmer weather.
bit more play in the tyres will increase contact patch and grip, and the movement in the tyre should generate a bit more heat in them keeping them warmer and more grippy as a result
try to spot the manhole covers further ahead (dont focus on the ground just in front of you as it makes your reactions worse, you’ll be more tense etc) and try to choose a line through earlier.
click up a gear higher than you would choose normally, smooth accelerating/braking/steering is key
Also pick your turning points so that you’re not having to turn/lean the bike on the covers/white lines. if you ride over them with the bike upright you shouldn’t suffer from grip particularly
oh, and try and relax. tendancy is to tense up when its raining which means you actually make the bike more unstable and twitchy, and more prone to sliding where there is poor grip. do the ol’ funky chicken (see if you can easily move your elbows in and out whilst holding the bars - if its difficult, you’re holding the bars too tight).
riding in the wet can be fun. if you get good in the wet, you’ll be awesome in the dry
i love the rain, haven’t noticed any loss of grip except when gassing it and the usual slippery suspects such as the drains etc. it always feels worse than it is when the bike moves around
I left Ace on sunday bout 4:30 or so, pouring with rain, soaked through, cos my new “waterproof” super duper jkt leaked all over the shop…but i didnt find the journey home too daunting…guess im just used to the 406? Its always jammed anyway, nothing new…what i just HATE is when the roads packed out bumper to bumper cars, and the one in the very front, is on a go slow…every other bugger behind goes at same pace, no one overtakes and the others are so far behind, they dont know whats happened ahead and just stay there doing 30mph…meanwhile, you have enough, start filtering through and get to the front to find…NOTHING !!! wide open road ahead…amazing! What is the car in front thinking??? Maybe they dont check the mirror and see that they are holding up miles of traffic !! (smile)
Joys of being a biker !!! Ive just had a new Pirelli on back wheel and its nice and sticky…so no slides going home for me…only thing was my wet through gloves (again supposedly waterproof)…guess who was back at the shop on Monday with wet gloves and jkt? NOW i have another pair of “waterproof” gloves and paid £30 on top for another super duper jkt…so waiting for the rain to fall all day again to test THESE ones out !!! ho hum …
Does ‘Waterproof’ actually mean shower proof ?
None of my ‘Waterproof’ bike gear is waterproof ! The only thing I know will keep me dry is my Repsol plastic mac, which in effect, is a big piece of tarpaulin with arms and a zip.
