Says handwash only on garment but has anyone used washing machine setting of hand wash to get their gear clean?
What sort of garment - eg base layers or textile jacket etc?
Yes. That’s how I washed my gtx gear.
Can’t say if it was right thing to do
For anything waterproof eg textile trousers you must use Nikwax tech wash or something similar and remember to clean out the detergent drawer of the washer first as detergents ruin the waterproofing.
A gentle wool/ hand wash in a machine should be ok for most things - if you have the option to change the spin speed turn that down for any clothes you don’t want to be pulled out of shape.
Tumble- drying jackets etc can revitalise the waterproofing on jackets but dont have it on too hot. Don’t put merino thermals etc in the dryer (or wool socks) as they will shrink
Thanks Jetstream really useful!
I need to go and get some nikwax wash then!
If you’re not in a rush click & collect via Tesco as suggested by National Treasure. You can get a litre of the tech wash and the wash-in waterproofer for about £15
Yeah will check but ideally want to do it today so it’s all dry by Monday morning.
Seems like the bike shop at Gants Hill does the stuff too
Oh yeah nick wax of course rather than detergent.
After washing I prefer to apply the water proofing nikwax (purple) with the spray.
Disappointed this isn’t related to Blade Runner, Westworld or Humans.

See men know how to use a washing machine !
If you like Humans I definitely recommend Äkta Människor.
I’m not allowed near the household machinery. Have dirty Tex jacket to wife to wash. Never been the same since.
If it’s gore-tex just put it on and have someone hose you down.
Well I throw mine in the washing machine, with armour in situ.
Wash on hand wash cycle with no heat and use fairy non bio…still waterproof and no problems, to speak of yet…oh and I’m a girl no fancy wax and stuff
+1 for the Nikwax Tech Wash, TX Wash In and TX Direct Spray
Your Female and you don’t use wax !!.!
Take out the armouring and use the gentle/silk/wool cycle on the washing machine at about 30 degrees. Ask the missus which ones they are . Detergents and fabric conditioner breaks down the waterproof and breathable membrane, so use what’s recommended or Techwash (which is actually pretty crap at cleaning but is membrane safe) and then use a wash in reproofer. There should be washing instructions on the label, if you can decipher what all those funny symbols are, or on the manufacturer’s website.
If you’re washing something particularly small and delicate, stick it in a pillow case first. That works just as well for the lining of your lid as for any of those hand wash intimates that you may have.
Nice little tutorial here
Done!
Seems as though the crap that came off the road and into me this week is the kind of crap that doesn’t come out!
