want to go on a long trip with the wife and need to put side panniers on. and was told that even if they are fire/heat proof the thing inside would prob melt!
anyone have a side luggage rack? so that there is a gap between the exhaust and the pannier? like this

If the panniers & frames you have are made specifically for the bike you have, then there should be sufficient clearance between the panniers and the exhaust for there to be no problem.
As you can see my left pannier runs close to the exhaust and have never had a heat problem.
