Yup, Garmin for the journey and satnav for the destination. The Garmin 62S is a hiking one that puts my location on a map and a straight-line to my destination - no routing. I much prefer to pick my own route as I go, and only use the satnav when I’m closing in.
Having a 12v socket somewhere on your bike is so useful. It’s one of the few mods I have. You can run all sorts of things off it like a compressor if you need to.
12v marine sockets are the ones you want…waterproof, I’ve mounted a double socket on wingrack for pillion to use, one on fairing infill to plug satnav into, and an extra one under seat for anything else
I bought one of these to use with my car sat nav tucked inside. Not exactly compact but works for me. My Samsung Galaxy S3 fits too if I wanted to use it. One of those marine 12v sockets keeps it charged. I would only use a sat nav in an emergency though, I prefer using paper maps:
Most of the mounts don’t work with non-tubular bars, but the Givi bag is designed to strap to almost any shape with velcro straps and is what I used to use with my scooter.
Just in case anybody’s interested this is my S3 using Navigon Europe while in the Givi S850. I like using it as it comes with a waterproof cover and just enough room to put my wallet in.
i’ve been looking at the givi sat nav bag option, not many pics floating about of them attached to sports bike handlebars, looking at my cbr600rr looks like it might interfere with the ignition key. Any opinions?
Not great, connection to the ‘headset’ is poor and is often one speaker only, plus its very quiet and difficult to hear once at speed, even on full volume.
just got back from a little rideout… got one of the cheapy Sat Nav holders, cig lighter and an old TomTom one and it worked splendidly. A couple of times was too busy looking at the corners and nearly missed turnings
Only problem is I think my maps need updating as my sat nav didn’t recognise the hindhead tunnel and thought I was on the A3 when I was in a National Trust car park! :w00t:
