Unstable Engine Idling

Hi Guys,

Just bought my 2006 R1 about a month back. The bike stalls very often in lower revs.
Did some research and found out that 05 R1s have an improperly designed Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which could cause an intermittently
unstable idle when the engine is at idling speed.
There is no mention of this problem on the 2006 R1.

Anyone else has this problem? Could the stalling be because of anything else?
Need some advice on what I could do to fix this.

Thanks.

Call yamaha uk, they will ask you for your frame or engine number and they will check to see if your bike needs the tps sensor replaced. This will then be done for free. I had mine done about a month ago and it sorted the same problems you are experiencing. I have also heard about yamaha saying that its not on the list but some change it anyway and find it wad the problem. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks Saffron. Will call them on Monday and see what the outcome is.
Will let you know.
Cheers

They had the same problem on the TDM900 as well.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp?tx=VOSA is a very useful link. And quite interesting if your really really bored.

Do I call the local Yamaha dealer? Any recommendations? I live in Central London.
How long would it take to fix the problem?
Wonder why the previous owner didn’t bother fixing the problem.

As the previous guy said give Yamaha UK a call, they should be able to tell if your machine is affected.

The previous owner might have thought it was a characteristic of the engine, or just live with the issue.

I called Yamaha UK this morning. They checked my VIN no. and they said that there is no outstanding recall on the 06 R1.
They suggested that i should get it checked at the local yamaha dealer and wont be paid for by Yamaha.
I guess I will wait until my next service and deal with the problem then.
Thanks for all the help anyways.

Hi mate i know the problem, Its your throttle bodies need syncronising, peace of **** really as i done my own on my bike, I have also a 06 model R1, running beutifull only because i do all the work my self, wouldn’t trust a garage persons advice when it comes to getting the job done:D

indeed that may help!

i have the kit to do it if you need some help

Thanks for the help guys. I am going to wait until my next servicing. Think I can live with it until then…

Just remmember while your waiting till your next servicing, the negative bits what you will suffer

erractic idle
poorer fuel consumtion
unstatable throttle response
Viberation

and to top them if there that bad as it sounds now they will get worse quicker, as i remmember a few other bikes that have had to be recovered, this is very dangerous when entering roundabouts especially when you get a stall;)
