Just wondering on people preferences for crossing the channel with their bike. Inspired by the Brugge run, but worried that it may be a bit too “progressive” for me, so thinking of getting some like minded newbies together for a jaunt across and wondered on peoples experiences.
Tunnel, no question. It’s a bit like sitting in a garage for 40 minutes but what’s wrong with that?
I used the ferry a few years back for a trip to LeMans motoGP and the weather was so bad coming back they cancelled our crossing leaving 100 or so bikers stranded on the docks. Eventually we all got put on leShuttle. I even beat my mates home who caught the ferry before me and ended up stuck in the channel unable to dock.
Advantages:
Speed.
Unaffected by weather conditions.
Turn up early or late and normally you will just get on the next train.
No worries about rough seas and strapping the bike down.
Personally, I like the Harwich - Hoek van Holland ferry. If you take the overnight one, you get a wee little cabin and free breakfast and you are ready to attack the day in Holland, at 6am, showered and fed!
It costs about a hundred quid but it’s a lovely experience. I love waking up standing on deck with a coffee in my hand a a fag dangling from my lips, with plenty of wind in my face and the sun rising on the sea.
You wanna get shoved through a hole that’s your business
I totally agree- last year I got caught out by the fire in the tuinnel and got the ferry-It was the day one, but still got a room… sitting on the deck just chilling out was awesome… Got chatting to a lad was was heading back to Ireland on a 640 adventure. We arrived in Harwick afternoon/evening and he was heading straight to holyhead for the 2am ferry!!! hardcore!! :w00t::w00t:
ze tunnel every time!
already booked to go across on the friday of the le mans GP!
i had enough of ferries going back and forth to see the rellies as a kid
a few years back my fave was the seacat; was closer to the speed of the tunnel with some of the benefits of the ferry
