We’re off to thailand for 7 weeks diving (woohoo!) but been looking at the insurance and while they are all advertised for a tenner, when I go for a full on quote, they rocket to over £100.
Can anyone recommend a decent reliable travel insurance???

Have you looked at Backpackers babe?
Annual polices normally are good value especially if you go overseas more than once a year.
I use http://www.insureandgo.com/ for an annual policy, I think it’s about £69 - it covers me for up to 90days in one trip and snowboarding. I got one of the more expensive covers as I did a 6 week trip this year to NZ and USA.
I would check that any policy you buy covers the activity you want to do, read the small print as some might not actually cover a particular aspect of you travel.
Check out the diving websites/magazines - they should be able to point you to a good company.
Check what max cover per item is. Most tend to top out at £250 per item and it can be a bummer if say your £400 camera gets broken or stolen. Unless it is covered by your contents insurance.
I’ve used direct line, natwest and goldfish in the past.
This site might help you.

I heard the post offcie is good.
Good for annual winter sports, not sure about biking though
Hi Alice, I’m so envious! 7 weeks diving! A pure dream come true! :w00t:
Anyway, some time ago I did my DM course in Thailand and learnt a lot more about diving than the average diver, with that in mind I would really recomend you not skimp on insurance and perhaps consider the divers alert network.

Diving as you know is very safe, but if something were to happen, they actually sponsor the chambers there and your dan card will get you in asap. Bear in mind a chamber can run at £3000 an hour…
www.scubaboard.com has some great stuff on it if your interested.
Have fun!
I always use this lot, good prices and need help they are always there.
Ahhh, you did the DM in Thailand huh? Well thats exactly what we are hoping to doo - AOW to DM…where did you do the course? We are thinking Koh Tao. Most of these package places include the insurance for the diving fortunately, and w wont be going with anyone that isnt associated with the Phuket recompression centre…
Dont supose you could recommend a decent dive resort???
We’ve used http://www.worldnomads.com quite lot ,we usually buy a yearly one.
one thing to be aware of in Thailand apart from the ladyboys (kratoys)
is if you hire a scooter your travel insurance will usually only cover bikes upto 50cc , most scooters in thailand are 125cc , so if you dump it they won’t pay up , if you are thinking of hiring one , phone or email your insurance company to check this , i’ve seen some pretty nasty crashes , one poor guy on crutches had to go back and ask the bike hire company for a dodgy receipt that said “50cc”
his hospital bill was a lot of money.
I think they have a recompression thingy on Koh Samui ? Phuket is a long way from Ko Tao. My son did his paddi on Koh Phangan with Haad yao divers last year.
some info here on the recompression doodat -
Hey Alice did you get my PM?
