Hey there peeps, has anyone done a car trailer training? I know on average a day and a half of training is offered with a test following straight after. As a complete novice in trailers and not driving cars much, what’s a good option for me?
How did you find your test? what happened on your test?
i meant catering trailer, i should’ve made myself clearer i’ve amended my post to mention that it’s a car driven trailer license that i need, i’ve passed my car driving test after '97 so unfortunately don’t have the perks of b+e category.
btw i know it’s a bike forum but it’s the only forum i’m registered in and thought that i might get lucky and get a response from someone who’s done it before or knows someone who has.
Anna , Im pretty sure you can go to a company that will give you an assessment of your driving with a trailer, and then advise you how much training you will need to pass the test. Paying for it is the draw back as its not cheap ,but they tailor the course to suit you. Hope this helps.
Sirens- in Bovingdon are a good training centre- use Bovingdon airfield for practice or sub 17 yrs and are good people. They do trailer training and test preperation
If you passed your car test after Jan '97, you now need to pass a separate test for towing a trailer, caravan etc over 750kg Maximum Authorised Mass. Most horse boxes, snack vans and caravans weigh this unladen, so unless you’re planning to tow a little trailer to cart some garden rubbish to the tip, then you need to take this training to get your car licence (B) upgraded to a car & trailer licence (B+E).
Expect to pay around £42 p/hour for this training, and I think there’s a test fee you also have to pay!
Did my trailer training to upgrade my HGV licence to a C+E licence for driving artics. There’s only ONE thing to know when it comes to the kind of reversing you’ll have to do in the test… THE INITIAL PART OF THE MANOUVRE IS COUNTER INTUITIVE. What I mean by that is that if you wanted to reverse your car into a space behind you on the left, you would reverse and turn the steering wheel to the left to manoeuvre your car into the space… which of course you’ve done a million times. With a trailer, you initially do the opposite… that is turn your car’s steering wheel to the right in order to kick the front of the trailer out… Once you’ve done this and got your trailer angled so that it’s heading towards the space, you bring the steering wheel back round and slowly reverse as normal, guiding the trailer in slowly.
Basically as long as you remember that the initial part of the manoeuvre is to move the steering wheel in the opposite way to what you’re used to, then the rest is just practising many times.
Thank you for everyone’s posts Martin’s post made me re-think my decision and get stuck in with converting and calculating for few days and finding out a combination that will work for me, and i’ve found a van and a trailer that would suit my needs for now hopefully i will be able to buy the exact models when it comes down to it.
as for trailer training, yep they are capitalist wankers - £480 for a day and a half of training
