With the amount of bikes being stolen recently would any one be interested in pooling together to buy trackers for our bikes? I rekon if 20 of us buy together we could get a real good deal. I know Afro has the details of a great tracker company that works. Let me know if you are interested and we can see how we could go about it.
All depends on costs really but im provisionally interested. Need more detail.
+1 sounds like a good idea, just need costs etc
Prices, prices?
have a look at this :
http://www.metis-products.co.uk/tracking/getmycaravanback.php
it maybe for caravans but there is no subsciption and it only costs you when it’s ativated and thats done via a “payasyougo” mobile sim card
they showed it on the telly a couple of weeks ago and it’s quite a small unit too
when it’s set if the vehicle is moved without your knowledge and exceeds 3mph it switches on and starts transmitting via the phone sim card and dials any number you tell it when setting up to warn that it’s being stolen then you just log onto the website and watch in real time where it’s going
sounds really good and as i say NO subscription either , which is the real killer cost
I looked into this a while ago, and there are many many choices and some almost just the price of a sim card, BUT I know that one type works for sure and once the bike is reported gone, they track it and lead the police straight to it. I will ask Afro to give us some more info on it including prices:D Obviously if there is enough of us we should be able to drive the price right down.
Buying myself an R1200GS Adventure after Christmas as a prezzie for myself so would be more than interested and the Flying Finn maybe going for the F650GS so I think she would be in as well.
Yup, interested, probably for two, maybe three bikes. As before, it’s all about price.
There will be a much better deal is we could muster fifty customers, which should be easy given Londonbikers membership.
As with all “selling”, it’s price and getting the news out to the punters.
im interested, probably 2 or even 3 bikes.
I would have 1 for the Bird, depending on price
I know RedZ has not mentioned it specifically, but if this idea fly’s I would keep details off the board so as prying eye’s wont know what the most likely tracker fitted to a bike with an LB sticker is goign to be.
Was thinking about this that this morning. No idea whos lurking on here.
funny you should say that, been looking to get one for the last week. Im up for getting one
Why would that make a differance? (genuine question) I have heard that said before but surely IF a thief knows a bike has a tracker isnt he less likely to take the bike? BUT if people feel like that, i am sure we can arrange it via PM or something. Thanks for looking out
I am waiting for Afro to give us some info and then we can get some prices.
you should never advertise an alarm or tracker if you do they will look for it quicker and lets face it trackers are not as good on bikes as they are on cars because of space i could tell you where to find and alarm or tracker on most bikes within about 10 mins
Yep, I’d strongly recommend keeping as many hints or details off the threads as possible. This website is easily searchable via Google for instance, and whilst it’s hard to imagine, some bike thieves do actually have enough brain-cells to both read and type.
Nuf said! If bulk buying is an option I will let you know and we will deal with it via PM. There is obviously enough interest for me to investigate it Unless anyone else better placed (like in the trade) would like to offer to work a deal with tracker? Anyone?
I agree with Jay about keeping details of your bike security private because you don’t want to give theives a headsup.
Tracker works best when a thief is not aware of it. They are still relatively rare to find on bikes so it seems thieves don’t specifically look for them.
A stolen bike tends to get dumped for a few days in a location near enough for the thief to surveil it. They determine if it has a Tracker by waiting to see if it is recovered.
There are two Tracker systems you can fit to a bike
Tracker Retrieve
With this system, the onus is on th owner to contact Tracker when they notice the bike has been stolen.
At this point, Tracker will remotely activate the system and it will emit a signal that is detectable by all 52 UK Police forces with car, vans, helicopters fitted with Tracking equipment.
It is also detectable by forces in France, Spain

£259 gets you the unit, it’s installation and the 1st year’s subscription.
£99 on top, pays for a lifetime subscription (for the bike you install the Tracker on only).
Otherwise, after the 1st year, you pay an annual subscription fee of £60**
Tracker Monitor
Same as above, but this system has a movement detector.
If the bike is moved for 5 minutes without the ignition being turned on, then the Tracker activates and sends an alert to the owners mobile phone in the form of a phone call from a recorded message.
You confirm whether the bike movement was innocent (like wheeling it back an forth into your garage) or whether some scum has stolen it.
If it has been stolen, then just like Tracker Retrieve, the Police get on the case locating it and recovering it.
**£399 gets you the unit, it’s installation and the 1st year’s subscription.
£225 on top, pays for a lifetime subscription (for the bike you install the Tracker on only).
Otherwise, after the 1st year, you pay an annual subscription fee of £125**
These prices were taken from the old Tracker website, but I have a feeling they may have come down, so call Datatool for the latest prices.
So, Tracker is not cheap, but neither is a nine and a half grand bike.
Goodluck peeps.
At the sort of prices Afro quoted, I’m not so sure about this.
If you have an expensive bike and high insurance premiums, o.k., but I don’t. But keep me in the loop for now.
I use a GSM based one tha’1s very good - no ongoing costs. I bought a few of them at the time direct from China for about 25 Quid. If anyone wants the web address just let me know. There is no minimum order but the get cheaper with quantity… Tested it a few times in Budapest and found it very accurate but probably less so if out in the countryside…
