thinking first track day, since i got my new gsxr i really wanna know how to use its full potential etc. any advice what track?
Snetterton or Mallory Park are both good newbie tracks as they are easy to learn. Silverstone is another one because I’ve heard it is very open, although I’ve only done the short infield circuit there.
At Snetterton, you get to top out your bike which is nice and there’s a tricky chicane, but it’s mainly just two long straights. Mallory is lots and lots of fun…Right hander Gerrards goes on on and you can practice banking it over more and more as your confidence builds.
EDIT: I was on drugs whilst I wrote this so excuse the edits
have only done brands indy and silverstone GP to date, but would recommend Brands for cutting your teeth. i’d stay away from GP or long circuits as its just more to learn and tend to be a lot faster.
Brands indy is a nice short circuit, you hit the corners more regularly so can get to grips with it. fun elevation changes, its prob the closest to london so nice easy riding distance there and back if you dont have transport for the bike (makes a big difference as you’ll be knackered at the end of your first day) - does depend where you live naturally.
generally slower circuit but nice and technical corners. druids hairpin and the clearways/clark curve section is good for kneedown practice
Snetterton is probably the best first track, a couple of long straights joined by a few corners. Good chance to really wind the bike up as well. Its also not that expensive when compared to some of the other circuits. Nearly 2 miles round! It also has garages with power.
I’ve only done one trackday at Silverstone GP. It is a fast circuit but it’s reaaly wide so people can over take safely. I was the slowest on the track and didn’t feel at risk. It is a long track though and a lot to remember
cheers peeps. whats brands like?
Brands Indy is a small circuit with no actual straight bits on it as such. Lovely track and needs comittment to ride properly. A bit undulating as well.
Because its fairly tight, to get the best out of your bike, re-gearing is nice.
ok first trackday forget gearing and suspension and going fast. Just get out there on any of our fine tracks in the UK and have a go. You’ll love it. Don’t expect to be fast just go there looking to learn and you won’t stop grinning for a week.
Any track first time is fine…no matter how long or short…it makes no odds.
Another tip is to ride the track like you would the road and then work up to going faster.
