after the much advertiised changes to the bike test a revamp of the car test is due to start later this year.
it will be more difficult and pre-test training will become more difficult.
still get your license at 17 but they predict it will take a year to pass the new complicated system includung have competancies signed off in a log book, and theory test to be harder.
you will have to master all the basic skills, parking reversing etc get them signed off before you can take a more complicated and difficult test.
the goverment see it as a way of effectively making the driving age 18 with out changing legislation ( more back door tactics) …
so maybe we can expect more changes to the bike system…get your test in now folks… bike or car it aint gonna get any easier
We’ve had lord knows how many bits of stuff piled on us from the Construction and Use Regs. through to training, tests and licences while the car drivers were up in arms some years back about having to wear seat belts.
Will the new tests include having to use their mirrors and keep their white stick clean?

Good idea as theres far too many idiots out there which shouldnt have a licence if you ask me.
Cynically though - yes its raising the driving age, yes its more dough for the goverment and yes - people that will be too dumb to pass the test will still drive because they’re too dumb to figure out that they might kill someone.
If you ask me something should be done about some of the instructors - I had one which couldnt speak english (I kid you not) and absolutely couldnt give a damn!
I have an even better idea than making the driving test harder.
just make everyone do their test again
that would instantly clear half the traffic over night, and to people who drive for a living, who may say that it affects their living, to be honest anyone who doesnt pass the test, should not be on the road!
i would like to see a whole ‘module’ of the syllabus dedicated to observation, specifically for pedestrians, cyclists and bikers…a video test just on these would be good…saying you should do it is not enough, make 'em put it into practice
Making it harder to get your license will achieve absolutely nothing.
Will it stop twats from tailgating, speeding in residential areas, looking before they pull out, not using mobile phones without bluetooth/handfree etc etc etc.
What happens to all the idiots that are on the road now (includes truckers, white van man, car drivers, bikers etc)? Nothing.
What are the tests like for most of people who come here from abroad? Do they have to be tested before they can drive here? No.
Will it make boy racers non boy racers - no.
The only way to change behaviours is to have EXTREMELY tough consequences for idiots on the road.
None of this cobblers like for Chris Tarrants ex-wife. Caught using her mobile phone for a second time - she should have been banned. However because she said her kids would get hassled if she didn’t have her car she gets off. Cobblers - she’s got plenty of money - put them in a cab.
