The old faithful TomTom One, the one with the rolled back to v7 software, has finally succumb to something unpleasant that prevents it from doing what its been doing for too many years. Sadly this time it terminal, so I’m thinking about a TomTom Rider 40!
At £200.00 + its proper expensive by comparison so who has a TomTom Rider and what do you like best about it?
I have just purchased a Tom Tom rider 400 which I gather, but could be wrong about, is the European version of the 40.
Having borrowed one last year I was proper impressed with the user friendliness. The ability to share routes via Bluetooth and the fact that I dropped it several times and it didn’t break. It also connect to my phone. It’s easy to import routes marked out on google maps and comes with a free subscription to Tyre. Also easy to read in bright conditions.
I have no real comparison to other sat navs but it fulfils my needs well. As it’s also the outgoing model it has dropped considerably in price. I can’t really see what improvements are in the newer model.
Others may have a more informed opinion…
I find it very easy to use. Got a shout on a rideout that we needed to change destination, changed it on the fly without needing to stop. screen is good in sunlight. windy roads option is excellent, “plan a thrill” not so useful to me. mounts are MUCH better than the old rider’s. Rotating view can be very handy. I love that it shows me petrol stations along my current route to plan stops. Importing routes also a doddle.
Thanks, you’re telling me what I want to hear, I’ll probably hit the buy button soon.
Seen the Rider 40 at £208.00 can anyone better that?

Even easier to change destination if you have it saved in you My Places. Also real time traffic updates and speed camera warnings are good. Everything can be switched of or changed to “only if I’m speeding” if necessary.
What’s the maximum size of SD card it will read?
not sure, I have 2Gb in mine but route files are so tiny that it doesn’t need more.
I’m thinking 2 Gb will be plenty. The old TomTom One just had a 1Gb flash drive for everything software, maps, POI’s, ITN files etc
Cheers sold/
Should be here on Monday
Anything else I should know?
I actually have a Rider 400 that I don’t use since I bought the GS and their Nav V.
You’d have to get a cable for it as I didn’t take it off the KTM when it got sold but they are only £20 or so.
It is the premium pack with the locking mount.
Let me know if you are interested.
Edit- looks like I was a bit late.
NT if you get a memory card it makes it much easier to import routes. I bought an 8GB for 8.99 off eBay. All the memory you should ever need on a sat nav.
I didn’t pay attention to that but it was just like the class 10 one that I bought
just get the cheapest, you won’t notice the difference.
of course, if you transfer routes to it via bluetooth or USB you won’t need a card anyways
Just checked on the TomTom site, looks as if it needs a micro SD card, unclear whether that requires the SD adapter or not. No matter because I found I already have both.
Roll on Monday
Maybe Tuesday
In the meantime I’ve hacked the old car TomTom One XL menus to give more or less what I need, including the elusive itinerary planning menus, if only the screen was daylight visible.
