been using my tomtom rider happily velcro’d to the yoke which works a treat. prob is that the battery life of the unit is starting to get to be a nuisance.
wanted to avoid using the bracket really (and the ram mounts etc).
was wondering if there is a way to rig up the power feed into the bottom of the unit? (round pin type) not waterproof this way but can just run off the battery power in those conditions/cover up the cable.
any ideas how best to do this? i know you can get cigarette lighter rigs for bikes (could be handy for other gadgets…) and hide it away. not sure how good an idea that would be.
not sure how you can charge the unit on the go without the bracket. Might have to ‘make’ something. Charlie would probably be the man to speak to.
Why not just use the cradle. I know it’s not pretty but I only have mine on the bike if/when I’m using it. When I’m not using it (which is mostly) all you can see is the the little ball of the ram mount on my yoke.
you can charge it off the mains using the access below where the usb/memory card go as opposed to the contact points on the rear of the unit. just need to rig up a feed to that really
the way its attached at the mo makes it sit more out of the way of the clocks etc
Although I don’t use a Rider, I run TomTom on my phone and have a Bluetooth GPS receiver.
Have tried the cigarette lighter cable option to power both devices and it does work well, but just make sure you route the cable so that it is not exposed as I found that the short cable attached to the bike battery means that the lighter socket is exposed to dust and dirt when mounted near the rear brake master cylinder.
What I’m going to do next is buy some heavy duty extension cables. Attach them to the cigarette lighter socket cable and route the whole lot from the front of the bike, under the tank and then under the front seat to the battery.
Ofcourse everything will need proper solution or else you may aswell ride the bike around town shouting, “Jihad, Jihad” waiting for you and the bike to explode.
Ive rigged up a ciggarette lighter to my bike and use the in car charger as well. Its all tucked up and tidy and works a treat and really easy to fit! Maplins sell waterproof sockets for a couple of quid.
i dont think you need heavy duty cables for that power feed mate. as long as use proper connectors/solder and shrinkwrap etc then you just need similar guage to the ones on the socket. I’m not 100% on electrics but was presuming it’d be spliced into an ignition driven wire and an earth in the loom up near the cluster rather than direct to the battery.
if you wanted it in the tail section would have thought you can simiarly wire it into the tail light feed. not sure on drain/whether this affects the resistors in place tho?
just found a neat rechargeable battery clip that sends via a usb feed - can use that cable into the tom tom (and phone, ipod for that matter) should keep the unit rocking in the meantime whilst i work out what i want to do with this…
