To SWORN or not to SWORN

I bought a project bike last winter which has been off the road ever since, but ive now finnished it! all ready for the road.

My question is? What happens when i road tax it? as I never actually SWORN it off the road? are they gonna question my year of non road tax? cant believe it hadn’t crossed my mind till now? but it genuinly didnt?

:ermm:

you should be ok but they may ask some questions or make you back tax it

Did you register the bike in your own name when you took ownership?

I had a simlar situation with an old car a few years ago and they never blinked when I taxed it.

Ryan, You’ll be fine!!! There’s absolutely nothing to worry about

yeah had the bike almost a year with my name on the V5? In my favour Ive got pics of the reck i bought and receipts for all the work ive done.

But as you say Ricky Hopefully I’ll be fine? Maybe its was SWORN before i got it? as I havnt ever had a warning from DVLA?

If they’re after you then you’d know about it :w00t: Anyway it’ll only be £80 they’d be after you for!!!

£80 yeah! I was just worried about a fine?

Had a similar situation a couple of years back when I suddenly realized the pile of bits and rust that I was slowly being put back together needed a SORN.

I wrote a nice letter to DVLA apologizing for my mistake, no comments were made & I didn’t have a problem taxing it when complete. Be up front would be my advice.

.

Things have changed. Make no mistake - any gap in taxation or SORNing and you will be automatically fined. This has happened to me twice now with no room for the fact that they were both new vehicles to me. When I complained they just reiterated the rules to me in a standard response. You will be highly lucky to get away with it. The fine is normally £80, reduced to £40 if paid within about 3 weeks. They also mentioned a proportional tax payment, which was less than the fine. But that was only for 1 month. Im guessing times 12, you may be in a different position. Im not sure…

I would say that if the bike is registered in your name and you’ve had it for a year and haven’t heard anything from the DVLA in that time then you have nothing to worry about, just tax it as normal once it’s ready.

So…will we see you out and about on it soon then? :w00t:

the automatic fine is complete twaddle…ignore it and argue your case if they try it on. I have on every occasion and I had 25 bikes…many off the road but not sorn’d…likely they wont…but as with many of these kinds of government bodies they have powers beyond sense…

I have done, mate. They fined me as soon as I re-taxed the vehicle, using the electronic system. They wrote to me, I complained, they wrote to me again telling me they would still fine me.

By the way, a V10 is no longer required at most post offices - they do it all at the counter now, without you needing to fill anything in. Obviously you could use the tax reminder if you have it - Im guessing it still works, even after 12 months

Ok, I dont have 25 bikes - only 7 and a car, a van and a 7.5t truck to carry all the bikes

haha what and sell the bandit??? nah…! :stuck_out_tongue:

I need the money in the bank! so need to get it shifted ASAP before the weather gets bad! should have shifted it a few weeks ago to be fair! but cant see it hanging around as its an absolute minter

Not tempted to take it on a couple of rides outs and then sell?

maybe one or two

Technically it wasnt a bike when you were rebuilding it, it was parts. Now it is a fully assemled bike you can tax it.

Let me know when, I wanna see your handy work

5 day gap between tax running out and me SORN my car, was on road outside house thats £100 to you sir thank you very much !! robbing gits !!!

If DVLA do cut up a bit rough over this have you pictures of your Gixxer as a “work in progress”?

This might help prove it was in bits for that period
