nowt to do with ‘cool’ imho. at 16 how much money did you have in yer pocket?
cheapest bike boots? £50 at least
trousers: £100
jacket: £100
cheap lid: £20, decent lid: £200. I know which I’d buy.
when i first bought a 50cc scooter I had at £19.99 lid. I’d just spent £700 on the scoot, plus insurance, tax etc - didn’t have anything left to buy gear with…
aye, agreed, but at 16 the only thing you really want (apart from a shag) is the freedom to get out of the confines of your house. The scooter gives you that, the rest is unnecessary (in the ill-informed opinion of siad 16 year old)
Flippin heck Blade, did you get out of bed the wrong side this morning? I know what you mean though…
The helmet undone with jeans t-shirt n no gloves is standard. Yes they are only teenagers however, carry on like that and some aren’t gonna see 20! As SheWolf said, do you remember being that age and feeling indistructable?
The parents should have a part to play, as should the law. I don’t mean the Rozzers. It amazes me as a newbie rider, that the legal requirement for a scooter/motorbike is a lid. Yet under H and S, you need goggles, gloves and a hard hat before you can play conkers!!!
A spill at 30mph will do the same damage if you’ve parted from a Motorbike or a scooter.
Instead of getting worked up over it, I see it as part of Darwins law Survival of the fittest (or in this case safest). If these inbread, missing links of human evolution want to kill themselves - let them. It’ll mean fewer of them, which can only be a good thing. In the end they’ll kill themselves off, end of sub species. It’s the ‘colateral damage’ of the bystander which worries me.
However, Darwin fails to have an effect in this curcumstances, as there will always be 16 year olds wanting means of transport.
I think you need to do a test before you can ride a scooter, and not just a CBT. The increased amount of experince of practice, under supervision will hopefully decrease the amount of accidents.
Also, i think the age should rise for people allowing to do a CBT. I know it was great to be young and fearless when i was younger…however, i was lucky i didn’t almost kill myself… other won’t be.:w00t:
Yes they’re annoying and yes they do silly things, but they’re young and they are learning from their mistakes, just like we all did.
I guess one has to try to remember that they will not always be like that, those that survive will become older and wiser, and they are, after all, the bikers of the future.
When my R6 was stolen I couldnt afford the insurance on another sportsbike so bought a scooter. I rode in my full leathers, Sidi Vertebra’s and Shoei helmet. The first day I had the bike I stopped at a set of lights and a bloke on a crotch rocket stopped next to me and said “cant you afford a real bike”. Now he must have been in his mid 30’s.
A nob is a nob no matter what age and what they are riding.
I’m with you, it’s not just the oikes with newly found (or nicked0 scooters, we all slow down for camera’s on a bike or in a car. The problem is not enough money to employ enough real rozzers on the roads. Not fixing the books with ‘special counstables’ (Hobby bobbies) or Community watsits (Plastic plod) failed the traffic wardens entry exam) but proper rozzers.
I dont forget being young, course i dont and im not harping on about that, shouldnt have brought up the “kid” bit to be honest cos age dont come into it…what peed me off more than anything was this twat, pulling out of the garage after just filling up, not looking and nearly making some poor kids day shite, cos his/hers mum is in hospital.
I know scooter owners, and ive seen them ride, yeh, maybe they dont wear boots and prefer trainers, maybe they dont wear any protective clothing, maybe they cant afford it or from choice to look cool, its up to them, but they pay attention …end of.
I dont know if this fool was looking to see if we were watching him, or he was looking at a billboard, and again thats fine, if your not on the move, but to be moving towards someone walking to their car?
If hed hit her, shed have gone up in the air or hed have gone over her, i dont know, but she wouldve been hurt in front of her kids…just cos nothing happened and he managed to swerve round her dont make it any less a incident, same as if that other one had hit a child in its pushchair, had the mum not taken them out to walk across, dont you think?
Buy your scooters, go out and have fun with your mates, they ARE a fun way of getting about…but like i said, doing stuff that happened this morning is not exactly “being young and free etc”, and on that subject, where does that end anyway…you get pregnant, its “oh, shes young and free and got carried away” you get pissed and have a fight, its “oh, leave em alone, they are having fun, only young once”, you get nicked for something (prob stealing something petty) its “oh leave em alone, they are learning, theyre only young”…phuk this “being young” lark…right im off to get my pension tut…
i was on a road where the traffic was moving very slowly and half way down was a box junction on my left. there was a car coming out of the turning, i had to give way so as he starts pulling out, i see a bloody scooter hairing down the out side doing about 40, i hit my horn to tell the driver , and the driver missed the scooter only just. i thought he was going to die. any way im still in the traffic and the scooter continued riding like a nutter , went past a right hand junction. did not see the car indicating right and smack!!! he t boned the car and he catapolted down the road. bloody serves him right. i stopped and waited for the police and the ambulance , and told the police he was riding like an idiot and it was not the car drivers fault. but as they say they are ok to ride around for 2 years on a cbt with no consideration for other road users.
Err…ive never pulled out of a garage or anywhere not looking ? what if he’d hit her? would we be saying this now ? i know what you mean but theres learning and theres stupidity, dont you agree ? We dont all pass our bike tests either so just cos we can ride a scoot dont mean we can move on to a bike?
i think they must get one for there birthday. my point was that the scooter rider must of **** himself when he had the first close encounter, but to carry on doing 40 down the out side in rush hour after that, and then to overtake on a right hand junction a busy one at that, he needed a reality check. how stupid:crazy: im not saying they are all like that but the poor bloke in the car and all the other cars the scooter hit have to pay for it as he probably had no insurance.
