Clean chain, then apply some oil, correct?
Which oil should I use?
Haven’t really seen much when looking for ‘motorcycle chain oil’ @ amazon, pops in some 10/40, 15/50 oil etc. in a combo pack with a lube. That good enough?
Also, what’s the difference between dry and wet chain lube?
May towards the end of the year or next year fit a scotoiler, but that’s not priority currently
Clean it with some of that chain cleaner, or paraffin yes, or wd40 (shoot me) - I’d recommend a Kettenmax chain cleaner as it’s like 15 toothbrushes and delivers/catches (most of) the cleaner nice and neatly.
Then dry the chain, apply lube. Forget about oil if you’re using lube, some old schoolers will lube a chain with oil but technology has moved on to stuff that is dry, doesn’t come off and lubricates just as well. That wurth dry chain spray comes highly recommended to me, it’s what I’ll buy when my current stuff runs out.
I’ve been using a Tutoro chain oiler on my bike for the last 4 years and they work very effectively. The type of oil I use depends entirely on the climate. In hot weather, I generally use 20W50 or whatever cheap oil I have. If you have the nozzle set to dispense correctly, there shouldn’t be any chain fling. If I’m absolutely desperate, I use 3 in 1 oil or any generic general purpose mineral oil. This one time I was totally desperate and ended up using veggie oil!
I clean the chain using white spirit. Assuming that the O/X rings aren’t a fanciful material, and are plain nitrile, then white spirit or any paraffinic oils are perfect to use.
I clean my chain once every 1000 miles/month but the tutoro takes care of itself.
so the dry lube as I understand replaces the oil, no oil needed after cleaning, only this stuff, right?
This kettenmax thingy looks quite useful, does it come with any liquids as well?
paraffin (to clean) is yr best bet i got mine from b and q about 7 quid for half a gallon how long that will last outweighs 8 quid a time for muc off(fuc off its shite) just dampen a rag over and clean yr chain and a small paint brush to dab and poke inside the chain being careful not to get any on the tyres of course
And just to clarify for me noob muppet here, the paraffin to clean, the lube to lube it, and with that type of lube no oil needed as I read here, right?
Or you can use two nail srubbing brushes screwed on to a hinge (so that they meet in the middle when the hinge is closed). If you get the double sided brushes, you also have the brushes on the outside to do more srubbing.
