I am toying with the idea of doing the trip to the Fatherland to experience the Nurburg ring.

go for it, the only downer of the trip is having to come back, everything else is a +
I think CharlieCBR is organising a trip - have a look in rideouts 
The Ring and the roads around it are awesome, a must do if you can. treat the ring with the respect it deserves, it can bite.
