the hornet pee'd itself on sat night

went out for dinner in central and had to do a fair bit of low speed filtering with the missus on the back. got to piccadillly and noticed the temp guage was max’d out. oh-oh. sure enough it starts to pee out coolant through the breather/whatever that pipe is at the bottom.

got her home later on when it was a bit cooler but still the guage was up in the danger territory mid-way into the journey. pretty sure i didn’t hear the fan on at any point so assuming thats the culprit. need to grab some coolant to top her up and see what i can do.

common issue? or just more cracking biking luck?

not had that problem myslef… :ermm: check that the fan comes on at 100degrees…

(not had the best luvk with the hornet have you :pinch: )

fuse

Could be a load of reasons why the fan isn’t coming on- when it happened to my hornet I did all the usual trouble shooting - narrowed it down to a frayed wiring connection in the loom where the loom sits under the tank.

we have a winner  cheers adz

just checked and sure enough the fuse is toast. no coolant knocking around so will go grab some tomorrow

have been too busy today chauffeuring the missus around to get her leathers, and fitting her gb racing protection to the triumph to do anything about it until now

any recommendations on coolant or are all good enough?

Just had this with the Mrs’ Hornet - fuse blown. But, changed the fuse and the fan still not coming on. Gave the fan a prod with a screwdriver (not a finger :w00t: - metal fan blades) and it blurts into life.

Most common cause of a blown fan circuit fuse? Sticky fan motor.
Take the fan out and get some WD40 into the bearings or odds on it will blow the fuse a gain.

If you’re low on coolant, don’t ponce around worrying about getting the right stuff, just top up the system with water.
It’s better to have not quite the right coolant than be low on the stuff. You can always correct the coolant mix later.

Thanks for the tips. Bike isn’t going to be ridden until sorted properly - will be picking up proper coolant etc later.

Did eyeball behind the rad last night when I did the fuse and can’t say much for Honda metal, looks well rusty behind there

Wd40 and acf50 defo in order.

all a bit odd really. picked up the coolant but when i came to fill it up it barely took any. so either i imagined my bike being incontinent, or a) the dude that i bought it off overfilled it or b) there is some sort of air lock/issue with taking on more coolant? never had to do more than top up a little bit of coolant in the past so not sure what is going on here.

anyway, buggered around with the fan a bit as advised, no joy at first, heat gauge went into the red zone. turned it off and tried again and the fan sprang to life shortly afterwards and seemed to be happy turning on with subsequent tries. will keep an eye on it in case the switch/sensor isnt’ a happy bunny, or sommat is dodge with the fan

have wd40’d and acf50’d the thing to hell so hopefully the rust will be at least retarded at the very least

will take her out for commuting duties tomorrow and see what happens

Some cooling systems are a “reetbugger” to fill due to air locking.

The usual fix is to run the system with the cap off 'till the fan cuts in(!) then shut off and wait for the system to cool.

Like most “usual fixes”, it doesn’t work all of the time.

Got the handbook?

i dout you lost as much as you think ben, if theres an air lock its in the head.

there should be a bleed screew, maybe on the thremostat, back of the engine block…

might be worth to bleed the whole system and put some new coolant in
