tax tea-leafs

someone has applied a five-finger discount to the tax disc on my girl’s scoot

what do you need to do to get a replacement?

Get to teh local DVLA office and pay £7 for a duplicate, oh and be prepared for a long wait too!

Disgusting I know happened to me twice now! Might be worth reporting it to the police as well that way the authorities know why her bike has no tax.

cheers dude. looks like the local office is wimbeldon (nice and close…). there’s no way either of us can go down there.

spoke to the dvla and can apply by post. have to hope for no hassle in the meantime…

can anyone recommend a tamper proof holder?

This happened to me with one month left to run on it. I called the police and reported it (apparently you’re meant to do that?), and as it didn’t have long to run, she suggested not bothering to replace it. Wardens can check if they want to.

Having asked around, it seems that a lot of people don’t bother, or at best they display a photocopy of it in the holder, and keep the original in their wallet. I’m doing that now because of the hassle of replacing it.

I’ve got one of those carbon-fibre look holders now, where the back actually bolts to the front with 6 or so hexagonal bolts (dunno what they’re called), then the whole lot bolts to the bike.

I had one of those ones where if you try and get it off the disc rips and they took it anyway. They do it to just be w@nkers as they cant use the disc as its barcoded. Its been suggested that you should keep it under the seat then you risk being done when parked up.

The police station I reported mine to wanted to arrest me because he thought I had ridden the bike to the station so I was riding illegal even though I was there to report my tax disc stolen!

Its a pain in the aris! The DVLA should just send a replacement free of charge in the post IMO!

Hmmm, had mine nicked twice now in last 3 months think the *******s were more interested in the trick holder though than the tax disc as the cheeky buggers had undone the bolts that held it to the frame-im off to go get a cheap and nasty plastic one this time

I have never left a tax disc on the bike for years now. If the DVLA come past looking for untaxed vehicles, as they do quite often here in NW1, they call the reg numbers and are informed by telephone. The police can not do you for not displaying tax, they can just report you to the DVLA. Tax disc is best kept in your wallet though, incase you get stopped.

Why you should have to pay seven quid for the rpiviledge of some toe rag nicking your disk is bang out of order.

Yup its bang out of order! I had a stand up argument with the police and the DVLA! I am the victim and I am threatened to be fined and arrested!

what you could do is buy a metal tax disc holder and wire it to the battery I’m sure that will stop them in the furture

No you see because then you will get arrested for GBH even though the bassa was trying to steal your tax disc!

i was under the impression that a traffice warden can issue you a ticket for non display and technically the bike can be removed if parked on a public highway

or is that rubbish?

if they do issue you a ticket, and you can prove you have a valid tax disc, do they just waive it?

When I had the jobsworth police officer that wanted to arrest me or report me for no tax disc he got stroppy and said even though the bike is taxed and you have reported a theft if the bike is reported a fine can still be issued of up to a £1,000. He was saying that it is a failure to display is what the fine is for not whether your taxed or not.

He was a right git!

yep!

A freind of mine got pulled by the fuzz all they could get him on was failure to display reported it to the DVLA and he got a £70, although the tax was only like £15 a year!! how poo…

Thats why you keep it in your wallett so you can produce it. You can always say that you are off to get a tax disk holder as the last one broke. Use your witts.
