When the Government cut the standard rate of VAT to 15 per cent on December 1st, the rate of fuel duty was simultaneously increased by 2 pence per litre. This ensured that the tax take from a litre of petrol would remain roughly stable in order to protect the revenues required to fund our essential public services.
